Job Summary: The Director of Acute Care Services provides leadership and direction in nursing matters and is responsible for planning, directing and evaluating activities of Acute Care Nursing Units; including implementation of the Nursing Department's Goals and Objectives, standards for nursing practice and the management and development of nursing personnel. He/she provides leadership and direction in nursing matters.
Minimum Education: Has completed the basic professional curricula of a school of nursing as approved and verified by a state board of nursing, and holds or is entitled to hold a diploma or degree therefrom. Bachelor's of Science in Nursing or healthcare related field required. Master's degree in Nursing, Business, Healthcare Administration or related Healthcare field preferred.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Valid multi-state or State of Oklahoma Registered Nurse License.
Work Experience: 5 - 7 years related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Individual in this position must have good computer skills adaptable to a wide variety of programs which are heavily utilized and relied upon daily to complete tasks. Ability to communicate with others, initiate work, and respond to requests from persons in positions ranging from unit nurses to Administrators. Must also possess good skills in revenue and budgetary matters including analysis of financial reports, staffing reports, and financial planning for a wide variety of units. Ability to work with outside vendors as well as a variety of in-house departments for implementation of renovation, construction, and the launching of new services or products. Ability to communicate directly, effectively and skillfully in writing, phone, and face to face contact with all staff members under his/her guidance, patients and family members, ancillary departments, and companies/schools/organizations outside the hospital. Must have critical thinking skills both in a clinical setting and in a managerial role who can listen, assess, and respond to multiple persons or situations at the same time. Must have an excellent grasp of managerial guidelines, hospital policies and procedures in order to provide leadership for the hospital, clinical managers, staff, and to the public at large. Must be an innovative thinker capable of generating new ideas and policy development. Must have excellent clinical skills in order to provide the nursing leadership required in this position and to develop and foster best practices in nursing in a variety of nursing arenas. Must be able to work with medical staff in a professional and supportive manner. Must possess great flexibility, good tasks and organizational skills. Must possess good conflict resolution ability. A dedication to fostering excellence in patient care.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Directs activities that promote the delivery of effective, quality patient care and the development of department and division policies, procedures & guidelines to comply with professional accreditation and government standards. Assures staff competency/compliance with mandatory in-services, TJC & hospital standards and assures that 91% are current. Monitors & improves patient outcomes through the PI program. Analyzes effectiveness and efficiency of current operations, programs & facilities. Utilizes a systems approach to provide leadership for intradepartmental activities and problem resolution. Mentors managers and staff using effective communication and problem-solving skills. Creativity and innovative approaches are utilized to resolve issues. Fosters an environment within departments and hospital that encourages interdepartmental collaboration and customer focus. Directs the management of human and material resources. Budget plans are completed in a timely fashion with analysis of cost reduction. Continuously monitors overall utilization of resources and directs corrective action related to fiscal management. Reports submitted to vice president of inpatient services within two weeks of receipt of budget report, reflecting reasons for variance in revenue and expenses, and plans for improvement. Actively participates and involves managers and staff in developing, implementing and evaluating the strategic plan for the hospital. Division and departmental planning reflect the vision and mission of Saint Francis Hospital. Activities are communicated, coordinated and timely. Collaborates with the medical staff, department heads, and the vice president of inpatient services to meet operational goals.
Decision Making: Independent judgment in making decisions from many diversified alternatives that are subject to general review in final stages only.
