Position Overview
The Office of Child and Youth Protection establishes, implements, supervises, and maintains safe environment programs in all parishes, missions and schools within the Diocese. Under the supervision of the Director, the Safe Environment Manager is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring safe environment training and background screenings for all clergy, religious and non-religious employees, and volunteers within the Diocese of Charleston.
Responsibilities
Policy Implementation: Enforce diocesan policies on mandatory background screening and safe environment training.
Policy Development: Assist with policy evaluation and development.
Budget: Prepare and manage annual budget for safe environment.
Eligibility Determination: Assess eligibility for service based on background screening results.
Records Management: Maintain records for all screening and training aspects.
Data Management: Maintain the department document management system and training platform.
Communication: Provide ongoing updates to pastors, principals, local coordinators, and other ministry leaders.
Compliance: Ensure adherence to the USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.
Training: Conduct regular training sessions for local coordinators and other personnel.
Audits: Develop and implement in-person safe environment audits for parishes and schools and prepare data for annual USCCB audit submission.
Outreach: Assist with outreach and implementation of safe environment processes in parishes with large non-English speaking populations.
Supervision: Manage department administrative staff.
Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Director.
Requirements
Practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church.
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
Attention to detail and high accuracy.
Bachelor's degree in theology, education, child development, or related field preferred.
Advanced computer literacy, including database management and MS Office Suite.
Effective communication and public speaking skills.
Working Conditions
Evening and weekend work as required
Travel to parishes and schools throughout the diocese.
Ability to perform computer work for extended periods.
Physical requirements include accessing and maintaining files, high volume of telephone and email communications, and lifting up to 35 pounds with out assistance.
