One In The Spirit Family of Parishes Mission Support Director (MSD)
Description: The MSD serves as Administrator providing direct support to the Family of Parishes. This position is responsible for assisting the Priests in Solidum in the overall management of resources, while setting goals to assist the Family in fulfilling its mission.
Qualifications
Prior Business Management Experience: Minimum of five years of previous Business Management (or related field) experience
Leadership: The ability to make timely and effective decisions resulting in wise uses of resources
Problem-Solving: Uses critical thinking, and able to improvise or suggest a backup plan to complete projects timely
Interpersonal Communication Skills: Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills establishing direct rapport not only with parish staff, but within the Family of Parishes, and the Archdiocese of Detroit personnel
Strategic Thinking: The ability to think long term and plan for the future while considering the present situation of the Family of Parishes
Respond to Staff Concerns: The ability to respond to daily Staff concerns while inspiring team members to perform to their best
Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field (with a minimum of 6 accounting/finance classes)
- Five years’ experience in business/accounting and management
- Two years’ experience in plant and maintenance operations
- Two years’ experience in Human Resources
- Two years’ experience in Parish Business Management or equivalent
Key Responsibilities
Leadership
- Serve as the primary advisor to the Family of Parishes on all matters of parish administration and operation
- Serve as staff liaison (along with the Priest in Solidum) to the Parish Finance Councils
- Assist priests in solidum in evaluating parish office staff
- Prepare time records for approval by the priests in solidum
- Administer personnel policies while regularly informing the priests in solidum of any concerns that arise
- Act as Human Resources Manager for the Family of Parishes lay staff
- Recommend personnel actions, including performance and salary evaluations, to the Priest in Solidum as appropriate
Financial Management
- Assist in the preparation of the yearly budget and monitoring budgetary compliance for departments
- Assist in managing (in conjunction with the bookkeeper) the banking and bookkeeping parish activities including offertory, collections, payables, and receivables
- Assist in preparation/submission of the annual financial report to the archdiocese
- Assist in preparing reports requested by the Finance Council and/or required by the archdiocese
- Advise on all archdiocesan financial policies and civil laws, monitoring parish compliance regularly, and reporting such compliance
- Ensure the timely filing of all required local, federal and state taxes and diocesan reports, including quarterly and special event tax returns
- Develop and recommend plans for improvement to parish physical plant and operations in conjunction with Family of Parishes staff
- In collaboration with the Priest in Solidum, key staff members and the Parish Stewardship Committees develop and implement any Archdiocesan or parish campaigns to increase revenue sufficient to fund the strategic plan
- Assist Priests in Solidum in providing input to Finance Councils for annual operating budget and long-range capital plan
- Assist Priests in Solidum in coordinating and overseeing submittal of annual parish budget to AOD for approval
General Management
- Serve as Family of Parish liaison with key neighborhood constituencies (e.g. Better Men Outreach, O’Hair Park Community Association, Northwest Detroit Youth Coalition and New Hope Non-Profit Housing Corporation)
- Review contracts and recommend approval to the Priests in Solidum; follow up with AOD to ensure contracts are properly executed
- Monitor Facilities Insurance programs ensuring appropriate property & casualty coverage
- Manage physical security program for Families of Parishes, to ensure control of keys, alarm systems and surveillance systems
- Maintain inventory of parish real and/or personal property (including office property)
