Position Description
Job Title: Organist FLSA: Non-Exempt
Job Status: Part Time
Reporting Functions: Reports to Pastor
Annunciation B.V.M. parish is seeking an energetic organist who is excited as we are about the soon to be installed Diane Bish Model Organ arriving in just a few weeks! We are hoping to find someone for the Organist (part time) position by Advent.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Choir rehearsal: Currently the choir rehearses on a Sunday between the 8:00 and 10:30 AM Masses.
- Music Selection: Plan all aspects of the music for the church and choir. Provide quarterly hymn selections.
- Provide organ music for all regularly scheduled Masses, as well as, additional holy days of obligation (Saturday 4:00 PM, Sunday 8:00 & 10:30 AM) Holy Day (Vigil 7:00 PM Holy Day 8:00 AM is not mandatory).
- Serve as organist if available for funerals and weddings.
- Report to the Pastor any concerns with the organ, piano, mics, etc.
- As a musician, be diligent in preparation and performance and cooperate with others to provide and enable the highest possible standard of worship in the church.
Experience:
- Preferred Bachelor's degree in Music, not required.
- Experience as a church organist preferred; must be able to read and play sheet music.
- Experience as a Music Director is a plus; not required.
Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities:
- Due to the nature and mission of the Catholic Church, all employees are bound to exhibit respect for the teachings and discipline of the Church regarding matters of faith and morals.
- Knowledge of liturgical practices, worship and special functions of the Catholic Church.
- A good knowledge of repertoire available for liturgical music programs for both organ and congregation.
- A high degree of proficiency in the use of the organ as well as piano.
- An enthusiastic willingness to work with other people, good communication skills.
- Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Fingerprint Check as required under Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Act 153 of 2014 (at least 1 year old.) As well as attendance at a Protecting God's Children class and Mandated Reporter Training.
Physical Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and arms to play musical keyboards, direct music, type, handle, feel, or operate objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. The employee frequently is required to sit, sing, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
Working Conditions: Normal, Catholic parish environment. Will be required to work Saturday nights and Sundays in one-hour increments, as well as religious holidays, and other events as requested by the Pastor. Indoors; noisy environment while playing the piano / organ and during choir rehearsals and performances, and in a moderately quiet office setting.
