Position Description
Job Title: Theater Light and Sound Technician
FSLA: Non-Exempt
Job Status: Part-time
Reporting Functions: Reports to the Theater Director
Job Function: A Theater Light and Sound Technician is responsible for designing, setting up, maintaining, and operating the lighting and sound systems for theatrical productions. This role requires technical expertise, creative problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with the producer, director, and other production staff to ensure that the visual and auditory elements of a performance enhance the overall experience.
Key Responsibilities: Lighting Technician
- Design and Programming:
- Create lighting plots and cues that support the artistic vision of the production.

- Program lighting consoles and automated lighting systems.

- Conduct lighting rehearsals and make necessary adjustments based on feedback.
- Setup and Maintenance:
- Install, rig, and focus lighting instruments.

- Ensure all lighting equipment is in working order and perform regular maintenance.

- Troubleshoot and repair any technical issues that arise during rehearsals and performances.
- Operation:
- Operate lighting boards and consoles during performances.

- Follow cue sheets and coordinate with the stage manager to execute lighting changes seamlessly.

- Train and supervise high school students working on Lighting Crew.
Key Responsibilities: Sound Technician
- Develop sound plots and system designs that complement the production.
- Program soundboards and digital audio workstations (DAWs) for playback of sound effects, music, and other audio elements.
- Install and configure sound equipment, including microphones, speakers, and mixing consoles.
- Perform sound checks and adjust levels to ensure clarity and balance.
- Maintain and troubleshoot audio equipment to prevent technical issues during performances.
- Mix live audio during performances, ensuring optimal sound quality.
- Execute sound cues and manage audio transitions smoothly.
- Monitor audio levels and make real-time adjustments as needed.
- Train and supervise high school students on Sound Crew.
- Performs other duties assigned by supervisor, administrator, or principal.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Theatre, Audio Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Previous experience in theatrical lighting and sound design/operation, preferably in a professional or high school setting.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with lighting consoles (e.g., ETC, MA Lighting) and soundboards (e.g., Yamaha, DiGiCo.)
- Knowledge of DMX, MIDI, and other lighting and audio control protocols.
- Experience with sound reinforcement systems and acoustics.

- Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Fingerprint Check as required under Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Act 153 of 2014 (No less than 1 year old.) As well as attendance at the online Protecting God's Children class and Mandated Reporter Training.

Working Conditions
- Schedule:
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the production schedule.

- Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
