Position Summary
Under supervision, the Liturgical Music Intern provides confidential administrative and musical support for the entities of the archdiocese and cathedral within the music ministry, the Office for Divine Worship and the Saint Cecilia Institute for Sacred Liturgy, Music & the Arts.
Principal Duties And Responsibilities
Assist the Director of Music with the following duties:
- Collaborate and grow as a team member in strategic planning, mission articulation and integration, supporting the music and liturgical praxis and formation.
- Real-time liturgical music ministry service as Cantor, Organist – coaching and/or teaching.
- Sing with the Cathedral Choir if in session.
- Plan, oversee, and implement music at 2 liturgies, from music menu to musician materials, to rehearsal, to liturgy guide, to follow-up.
- Take organ lessons from staff (practice and organ available on your own time).
- Study the Filing System, Organizational System as models of music ministry administration.
- Assist with the management of the Organ Academy materials, and annual Choral digital files.
Assist the Liturgy & Music Coordinator with the following duties:
- Update database of cathedral and archdiocesan parish musicians and liturgists.
- Update music minister and liturgical music planning schedules for archdiocesan and cathedral events. Communicate with ministers regarding planning schedules and events.
- Update templates: funerals, weddings, sacraments, liturgical music plans for cathedral liturgies, and unique events for the Director of Music.
- Prepare music minister binders (digital and paper) for weekly and holy day celebrations.
- Participate in library and vestment care.
- Assist in the preparation of special projects and weekly publications.
- File music graphic, hard-copy music and other items in the Cathedral Music Ministry library including English propers, Core Repertoire, and music library database.
- Monitor/report copyright compliance as needed for archdiocesan and cathedral liturgies/events.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of the Catholic Church's liturgy and sacraments.
- Music literacy in chant, vocal music and organ.
- Basic knowledge of the Roman Missal and Lectionary with English language fluency.
- Experience with the Catholic Church's liturgical music practices.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills, personal initiative, and independence.
- Facility in praxis of Gregorian chant in modern and square notation.
- Ability to work efficiently in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to learn basic archdiocesan style practices within Adobe.
Education And Experience
- Background in and/or knowledge of the Catholic Church with a demonstrated commitment to the mission and teachings of the Church.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Currently enrolled or a recent graduate at a college or university pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Music, Sacred Music or a closely related field.
- Experience in liturgical music ministry required.
- Experience working with liturgical resources and church documents preferred.
- Practical experience in liturgical music ministry preferred.
- Experience as a Cantor preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Routine office environment; ADA-accessible building.
