Posting Title: Grad Law Library Preprofessional Overview:
The Graduate Library Preprofessional (GLP) Program, administered by The Catholic University of America Libraries with the cooperation of the Department of Information Sciences, has a twofold purpose: providing selected new students in the Master of Science in Library and Information Science (MSLIS) programs with preprofessional work experience in the University’s libraries, thus establishing a foundation for their first professional positions; and providing the University’s libraries with a cadre of highly motivated and dedicated employees. The next opening at the Law Library is expected to be for the Fall 2026 semester.
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position, which represents the full range of anticipated compensation, is minimum wage for the District of Columbia (as of July 1, 2024 is equal to $17.50/hour).
Responsibilities:
GLP positions are designed to give the student full-time exposure to the activities and responsibilities of preprofessional librarians and opportunities to develop professional competencies and skills. The Law Library’s Graduate Library Preprofessional (GLP) specifically participates in the management and maintenance of the tangible library collection, and supports user services at various access points within the library. The GLP also supports law library digital initiatives, including maintenance of an institutional repository, production and content of online user guides, and assists with technology troubleshooting for library users. The Law Library’s GLP will also be provided an opportunity to gain library experience working with both the circulation and the reference and research department. The GLP works under the supervision of experienced librarians whose on-the-job instruction is intended to give them insights into the workings of an academic law library and the needs of its clientele. Other opportunities for growth and development are provided during the course of the program.
Qualifications:
The Law Library’s GLP position is open to both incoming students (no classes yet completed) and currently enrolled students in an MSLIS degree program in the Department of Information Sciences at The Catholic University of America. However, all candidates must be officially admitted to an MSLIS degree program in the Department of Information Sciences in order to be eligible for this position, and must provide proof of acceptance to the program in their application materials. Provisional or probationary admission does not qualify an applicant for a GLP position. GLPs must also be eligible for full-time employment in the United States. Selection is made by the librarians designated as supervisors of the GLP position in the Law Library. A resume, cover letter, and copy of the MSLIS program acceptance letter must be submitted with the application package.
