OVERVIEW:
Through ministry, community, study, and prayer, the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids share Christ’s message of redemptive love that reflects God’s desire for a just world. SUMMARY:
The Promoter of Justice for the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids will have an appreciation for contemplative practices, desire for ongoing education, and ability to keep abreast of critical issues in social and ecological justice. The Promoter animates and enables the Sisters, Associates, and Colleagues in Mission to engage more effectively in the work of peace and justice and leads advocacy for systemic change.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· May include some evenings, weekends, and travel.
· Continues to develop the Laudato Si initiatives.
· Drafts timely messages in collaboration with the Congregation’s Director of Communications responding to immediate social events and concerns.
· Collaborates with the local Pax Christi group.
· Researches and stays current on issues of concern to the congregation including legislative responses in the United States.
· Communicates to the Leadership Team and congregation any learnings, insights, questions, etc. surfaced at faith-based, civic, and religious organizations.
· Educates Sisters, Associates, and Colleagues in Mission on current issues of justice, peace, and care of creations.
· Monitors and evaluates the impact of advocacy efforts and adjusts strategies as needed to achieve desired outcomes.
· Animates and facilitates the Congregation’s Inclusion Committee.
· Networks with other organizations on issues, such as climate change, ecology, immigration, economic justice, racism, violence, human trafficking, war, nuclear disarmament, gun violence, growing in non-violence, care of creation, hospitality, refugees, and homelessness.
· Provides training and guidance in advocacy.
· Prepares an annual strategic plan and budget.
· Assists the congregation in prioritizing advocacy areas and recommends positions for Congregation action.
· Represents the Congregation with the Dominican Family (Justice Promoters of North America & Justice Promoters of the Dominican Alliance), church entities (LCWR Region VII – Promoters of Justice & Diocesan Offices), and faith-based and civic organizations sharing our values and priorities and in which we have membership and/or investment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor’s degree in social science, theology, eco-justice, sustainability, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
· Minimum three years of experience in community organizing or related field.
· Knowledge and commitment to the mission of the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids.
· Knowledge and commitment to the Catholic Social Teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.
· Competency with social media technology.
· Knowledge and competence in educational development and public policy.
