Summary
The Diocese of San Diego is seeking a qualified, experienced and passionate 5th grade Teacher who is deeply committed to developing Christ-centered, forward-thinking leaders to serve our future Church and our world for the 2024-2025 school year. St. Mary School is a diocesan school located in Escondido, California. Teaching Responsibilities:
The teacher services the school in an instructional capacity and performs the specific duties assigned by the principal of the school. Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:
- Plan, develop, and utilize a variety of instructional materials and aids for a blended learning environment.
- Develops schemes of work, lesson plans and assessments that are in accordance with established procedures that maximize learning including but not limited to the Common Core and California State standards as well as the Diocese of San Diego Religion Standards
- Provide group and individual instruction to motivate learners, and effectively utilize the time available for instructional activities in a blended-learning environment.
- Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction and assessment.
- Maintain appropriate standards of learner behavior, using age-appropriate management strategies and techniques, including positive reinforcement for a blended-learning environment.
- Provide appropriate feedback in a timely manner.
- Encourage and monitor the progress of individual learners and use data to adjust instructional strategies.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of learner progress and development.
- Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, diocese policies and school regulations.
- Prepare required reports and curriculum maps.
- Participate in team, school, diocese and parent meetings.
- Communicate necessary information regularly to learners, colleagues, administration and parents regarding learning progress and student needs.
- Establish and communicate clear standards-based outcomes for all learning activities.
- Prepare and maintain the classroom for appropriate learning activities.
- Utilize a variety of teaching methodologies in a blended, multilevel, individual and online learning environment.
- Observe, monitor and evaluate learning performance and development.
- Utilize effective assessment techniques to accurately determine and record learner progress in a blended learning environment.
- Collaborate with colleagues to improve instructional practices throughout the school and share best practices
- Actively participate in ongoing professional development
- Other duties as assigned
Administrative/ Other Responsibilities:
- Return voice-mail/e-mail messages in a timely manner, within 24 hours weekdays
- Communicate regularly with parents, posting weekly on Class Dojo with classroom updates
- Submit assessment data and complete tasks assigned by principal in a timely manner
- Maintain a neat and orderly classroom
- Demonstrate a respectful demeanor with staff, students, and parents
- Observe utmost confidentiality regarding parent, student, staff information/conversations
- Participate in appropriate professional activities to support leadership and instructional roles
- Supervise playground and other areas of duty as the role may require
- Other duties as assigned

Religious Qualifications:
- Active, practicing Roman Catholic (preferred)
- Basic Catechetical Certification (within 2 years of being hired)
- Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy
Professional Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The
requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- B.A/B.S degree in an academic subject from an accredited institution.
- California Multiple or Single Subject Credential with relevant experience (out of state also acceptable).
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the blended learning environment.
- Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
- A basic understanding and acceptance of Catholic School philosophy, goals and objectives
- Appropriate control and discipline techniques, which will enhance the learning environment
- Clear criminal background check (a clear Livescan for the Diocese of San Diego is a condition of employment)
- Positive professional references and recommendations
Physical Requirements:
To successfully meet the needs of the students in his/her care, the teacher must:
- Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom. While standing the teacher will frequently hold objects they are working with or demonstrating
- Sit on an occasional basis when developing lesson plans, grading, etc.
- Walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks. Walk on both even and uneven surfaces.
- Deal with students while kneeling or squatting, stooping, or bending.
- Reach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity; may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at the class.
- Assist in moving children's desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom to influence the learning situation. It is occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds from the office to classrooms.
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to be inside the classroom. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the classroom and preschool environment, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility to attend meetings, trainings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend trainings or workshops.
It is important for elementary school teachers to be able to:
- Speak clearly so listeners can understand. Understand the speech of another person
- Hear sounds and recognize the difference between them; focus on one source of sound and ignore others
- See details of objects whether they are nearby or far away
- Have unimpaired or corrected vision/hearing
