Position: Part-Time School Nurse
Reports to: Assistant Principal for Student Services
Purpose And Scope
Under the supervision of the assistant principal, the School Nurse is instrumental in creating a climate of health and well being in the school by: serving as a direct link among physicians, families and community health care service and agencies; providing relevant health instruction, counseling and guidance to parents, students and staff; and by upholding professional standards and diocesan policies
The nurse assists the Church and the school in the mission of evangelizing. The nurse contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and to the community. By bearing witness to Christ, His Church and the teachings of our Catholic faith, the nurse cooperates with Christ in the academic, spiritual, and social education of our high school students. The nurse leads, instructs, and utilizes effective pedagogy; obtains necessary academic certificates; participates in continual professional development; maintains detailed and accurate records as required by the school; and imparts a Catholic worldview through the curriculum. In addition to academic preparation, record-keeping and accountability, the nurse, as a member of a “house” within Notre Dame Preparatory High School, serves as a mentor and campus minister to all students.
This position requires the ability to effectively communicate via phone and email; ensure that all duties are completed accurately and delivered with high quality and in a timely manner; flexibility, forward thinking and managing deadlines; willingness to seek the latest educational practices and implement; and rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and a wide degree of creativity and latitude are expected. New faculty and staff are provided with a mentoring program.
Essential Job Functions
- Strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education; shows evidence of knowledge of the Catholic philosophy of education; promotes gospel values and Catholic moral teaching; upholds the doctrinal teaching of the Catholic Church; provides opportunities for the students to be prepared for life in today’s Church and society.
- Plans and implements school health programs in cooperation with administration.
- Provides health care services to students.
- Maintains accurate health records for all students
- Dispenses medication according to diocesan policy
- Keep an accurate daily log of all student contacts
- Assists with attendance issues as directed by the principal
- Participates in medical examinations as directed by diocesan or school policy
- Counsels students in good health habits
- Instructs classes in skills relating to health, first aid, and emergencies
- Participates in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of students
- Continues professional development to remain current in field
Performs any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal.

EVALUATION
The performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the procedures developed by the Diocese of Phoenix and Notre Dame Preparatory under the direction of the Chaplain, Principal, Assistant Principals and Dean of Faculty.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Twelve-month employee (paid in 12-month contract), full-time, salaried. The Executive Committee under the guidance of the Diocese of Phoenix establishes base salaries and stipends. A schedule of mandatory days and extra responsibilities is provided prior to the start of a new school year.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
- Preference given to a practicing Catholic, but faithful persons of other faiths are welcome (admin jobs must be practicing Catholic)
- Must be willing to make a public Profession of Faith if Catholic; if non-Catholic, willing to support Catholic teachings and philosophy
- Must have Arizona School Nurse Certification
- Must have experience in working with children and/or school health programs; genuine liking for and ability to work with children
- Must have current CPR certification
- Must be in good physical condition
- Must have initiative, creativity, and problem-solving skills; judgment in handling different personalities and emerging situations; proficient communication skills with both children and adults; positive attitude in crisis situations and ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Must have knowledge and understanding of positive disciplinary techniques and child psychology
- Receive Safe Environment Training and signed the Code of Conduct. AZ Fingerprint clearance completed. All completed prior to the start date.
