Responsibilities
Position Summary:
In accordance with the mission and philosophy of Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican Hospitals, the Chaplain is a professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for providing pastoral care for patients and their families. He/she applies our Core Values to the performance of every job duty. These Values include Dignity, Collaboration, Justice, Stewardship and Excellence.
- Provides spiritual and emotional care to patients, their families as well as hospital staff. Provides pastoral care and counseling consistent with the plan of treatment developed for each patient.
- Triages patient needs and completes initial visits to newly admitted patient in a timely manner, including documented comprehensive spiritual assessments and care plans. Completes an average of 12 substantive patient care visits per 8-hour shift. Assists patients in completing Advance Directive paperwork.
- Provides for and participates in hospital dedication/blessing ceremonies as well as provide religious ritual/services for patients, families, staff and volunteers as requested and appropriate.
- Participates regularly in interdisciplinary rounds on the units to which he/she is assigned.
- Takes an active role in addressing concerns with patients, families, other health professionals and physicians by participating in clinical case and family conferences.
- Maintains availability for ministry in crises including all codes, deaths, Emergency Room (Trauma) calls and disasters.
- Assumes responsibility for on call support for evening and over night during weekdays and weekend as scheduled.
- Attends and participates in departmental staff meetings. Maintains current professional certification and attends seminars and courses as appropriate to stay abreast of emerging trends in spiritual care.
- Fosters a cooperative effort in meeting the goals of the team and sharing the workload.
- Communicates a positive and caring attitude toward the unit, peers, staff, patients, and other contacts.
- Maintains confidentiality of all patient and hospital-related information, communications and documents.
- Participates in the orientation of new staff and new volunteers to the department as requested.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Supervised healthcare chaplaincy including hospice experience of at least one year which may include Clinical Pastoral Education.
- Master's Degree in theology from an institution accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education accredited by ACPE.
Required Licensure: within 2 years from date of hire into a benefited position.
- CHAPLAIN - Obtain certification as a Board certified chaplain by Association for Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC); Or
- Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) - to be tracked manually and locally; Or
- Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) - to be tracked manually and locally.
Required Training:
- Completion of all annual required education and any updated safety training, as well as maintaining their particular chaplain association membership dues and/or annual certification fees in order to retain certification status.
- Completes and maintains required unit specific training.
Special Skills:
- Understands and is able to apply the Ethical & Religious Directives of Catholic Healthcare Services.
- Sensitivity to diverse religious and cultural practices and values.
- Ability to function effectively in crisis and under stress.
- Ability to effectively use technology to electronically document in the electronic medical record, send and receive e-mail, etc.
- Is aware of and understands the Ethical & Religious Directives of Catholic Healthcare.
- Excellent communication and pastoral counseling skills.
- Sensitivity to diverse religious and cultural practices and values.
- Ability to function effectively in crisis and under stress.
- Ability to relate to and be supportive of other members of the hospital staff.
- Capable of theological reflection with persons of any faith tradition.
- Ability to integrate and apply pastoral perspective and competence in a variety of functions e.g. interdisciplinary care conferences in-service education and group process.
- Organizational and administrative skills.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating policy and procedure manuals.
- Completion of all annual required education and any updated safety training. Completes and maintains required unit specific training.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in acute care hospice or long term care.

Pay Range
$24.10 - $34.94 /hour
