General Position Summary: The Director of Music is responsible to develop and grow music ministry in accord with the Pastor’s vision and the key goals of glorifying God and fostering the sanctification of souls. This position oversees the parish’s entire musical efforts.
Principal Accountabilities
- Recruits, develops, trains and directs choirs, ensembles, musicians and cantors for the Weekend liturgies, Triduum and Holy Days
- Develops and directs Children’s Choir; encourages youth participation
- Selects Music for all liturgies, prepares Worship Aids for all liturgical celebrations
- Maintains and coordinates the audio equipment
- Oversees compliance with copyright laws and licensing procedures
- Oversees the Choir library and musical resources; maintains all instruments
- Provides music for funerals, meets with the families
- Meets with the bride and groom regarding wedding music
- Develops parish efforts to evangelize through Church music
- Organizes recitals and choir performances
- Interacts with parishioners, present at parish events.
- All associated administrative tasks
- Participates in staff and Diocesan meetings

Working Conditions And/or Physical Requirements
- This position works in a typical office environment but is subject to stress due to the evolving and quickly expanding needs of the Diocese, tight deadlines and moderate workloads.
- Works weekends and some evenings
- Ability to stand for lengthy periods of time during rehearsals and liturgies.
- Ability to sit and perform computer work for lengthy periods of time.
- Ability to accept work interruptions while still remaining focused on duties.
- Data entry via computer keyboard requires repetitive and frequent hand and wrist movements.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds without assistance
Travel Requirements
- Infrequent travel, by car, may be required to Diocese Parishes and/or schools.
- Infrequent travel to conferences and seminars related to Music.
Education And Experience Preferred
- Degree in Liturgy or Music preferred
- Ten years’ experience in a pastoral setting
- Must be able to arrange parts for various solo instruments
- Has outstanding skills as an organist, pianist and choral director; able to play the organ to a high professional standard and maintain the standard through regular practice and continuing education; able to improvise
- An understanding of GIRM and the rubrics of the Roman Missal
Knowledge And Skills Preferred
- A thorough knowledge of the Catholic liturgical and musical patrimony
- Knowledge of the Catholic Church, Catholic Sacraments, Catholic Rites and Liturgies
- Effectively lead and coordinate the work activities of staff, ministers and volunteers
- Demonstrated aptitude for adaptability and flexibility.
- Practicing and committed Catholic that affirms all Church Teachings; if married, in a marriage recognized as valid by the Catholic Church
- Ability to receive, understand, retain, and complete verbal and written tasks.
- Ability to work independently as well as in teams.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service and work efficiently and collegially with staff, clergy, religious, and laity.
- Excellent organization, prioritization, time management and communication skills.
- Computer skills in MS Office 365, especially Publisher, and music notation software.
