Custodian
Position Purpose
The Custodian provides a safe, clean, attractive, and comfortable environment to ensure full and productive use of school and parish facilities. To accomplish these tasks, the Custodian must work closely with the staff and administration of the school and parish. The Custodian shall be accountable to the facilities supervisor and parish business manager.
Essential Functions
- Check and secure buildings at beginning and end of shift for the purpose of ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the building.
- Clean classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, kitchens, restrooms, offices, stairways, gymnasiums, church, parish hall, meeting rooms and other areas of campus buildings according to established standards.
- Sweep, mop, buff, and otherwise clean floors.
- Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and blinds.
- Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills.
- Clean windows and glass areas.
- Removes graffiti.
- Replaces light bulbs.
- Maintain inventory of supplies, materials, equipment, and fuel, and place orders as needed to ensure the smooth and efficient operations of custodial tasks.
- Set up and breaks down chairs, tables and equipment in cafeteria, meeting rooms, and functional rooms.
- Clear snow from entrances and walks and spread sand or ice melting products.
- Perform grounds-keeping duties, clear debris and maintains grounds.
- Receive deliveries and assist in unloading trucks and storing supplies.
- Deliver supplies and materials to classrooms, bathrooms and other areas of the building.
- Empty wastebaskets, pick up and remove trash and assist in recycling programs.
- Inform supervisor of any maintenance or other issues needing attention.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Equipment: Use hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power tools and hand tools.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with others.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
- Ability to describe orally or in writing maintenance or repair problems as needed.
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents, parishioners and others contacted in the course of work.
Safety Requirements
- Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment.
- Wear appropriate safety gear.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Ability to withstand heights and work in crawl spaces.
- Typical risks associated with using tools of the trade.
- Occasional strenuous physical work.
- Occasional work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
Qualifications Profile
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications include:
- High School Diploma or completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
- Previous experience in building cleaning and maintenance.
- Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and ability to provide own transportation.
