The Director of Hospitality of the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe is key to the spirit of an encounter with God as pilgrims step upon this sacred ground and are welcomed in God’s house. The Director of Hospitality is a person of good Christian witness and active in the Sacramental life of his/her parish. By his/her very nature, the Director of Hospitality is friendly, caring and giving. The individual is a steward of lay ministry in garnering the grace of encounter with pilgrims to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. The omission of specific statements of the duties or functions does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Administrative
- Collaborates with other Church leaders in service of the mission of the Diocese of Orlando.
- Collaborates with staff with a focus on Christ, bringing forth the Diocesan core values to encourage individual and team growth.
- Works cooperatively with various personalities within the Catholic Church, facilitates good communication and is responsive to requests of others within a large, complex and diverse working environment.
- Coordinates staff and activities to ensure that pilgrims have a spiritual experience and a thirst to return on future trips.
- Maintains good working relationships, effective communications between Basilica staff, volunteers, various groups and outside authorities.
- Attends all pastoral staff meetings.
- Working with the Director of Operations, the Director of Hospitality assists in creating, planning and overseeing budget adherence for the area of hospitality.
- Collaborates with Manager of Facilities assuring the property has good ‘curb appeal’ and attracts pilgrims. Communicate any safety issues to the Rector and Manager of Facilities.
Volunteers
- Recruits lay ministers for various purposes. Assures their safe environment certification as well as appropriate training has been completed and is up to date.
- Oversees a volunteer team of background screened individuals to handle weekly money counts according to Diocesan cash collection policies. Coordinates count results with Operations Director and Ordinary.
- Oversees the schedules of lay ministers and their performance in their various roles.
- Recruits and trains volunteers to manage visitors for the upcoming Gospel Gardens project, to include facilitating tours and informational sessions related to the Stations of the Cross.
Liturgy
- Ensures that worship conforms to the liturgical norms and laws of the Church and the Diocesan Office of Worship;
- Educates the assembly and provides input for parish organizations in matters of liturgical understanding, sensitivity, and planning.
- Coordinates and supervises the formation, training, and scheduling of all parish liturgical ministers (sacristans, altar servers, musicians, ministers of hospitality, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, Eucharistic linens helpers, altar guild, AV ministry, Art & Environment, etc.).
- Prepares liturgical texts for liturgies including special liturgies and Holy Days. Compiles weekly presider’s texts; prepares binder for the presider and lector.
Marketing
The Director of Hospitality assists the Pastoral Staff and the Diocesan Communications Office in setting goals for marketing the Basilica to Catholics within the Diocese of Orlando, the Province of Miami and the world through strategic analysis and planning. The area of marketing includes website development, social media, advertisements, flyers, signage, community involvement, retreat and event planning from conception through fulfillment. Coordination with the Director of Operations and the Secretariat for Communication staff is key to this area.
Service to Pilgrims
The Director of Hospitality provides extraordinary service to pilgrims to yield a return to the Basilica on future trips, and also increases word of mouth. Working with hotel concierges to elicit referrals for those Catholics seeking to participate in Mass to assuring facility is always clean and well maintained to thanking pilgrims with notes to acknowledge their presence will assure the fulfillment of the ministry of the Basilica.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, have a strong work ethic and be able set an ethical tone for the conduct of diocesan business. The successful candidate should be a practicing Catholic with a sincere respect and appreciation for the Roman Catholic Church and its teachings. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. CATHOLIC FAITH
Practice of the Catholic faith is required. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals or laws of the Church or the policies of the diocese.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in hospitality, marketing or business preferred.
- Certification in Liturgical studies or certification in a diocesan liturgical formation and certification program for liturgical ministry preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership ability based on 5 years of experience within a Catholic organization with at least 3 years of supervisory experience.
- Formed for Pastoral Ministry.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate Social Media projects.
OTHER DESIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Excellent leadership skills with an ability to manage change and respond effectively to a broad range of situations in a fluid environment with time and resource constraints.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with an ability to motivate staff and volunteers to achieve Basilica objectives.
- Excellent oral/written communication skills with an ability to work effectively with lay staff and clergy (Bi-lingual in English and Spanish a plus).
- Excellent analytical skills with an ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must be able to work flexible hours to complete various tasks as required. This includes weekends and holy days when the celebration of Mass and numbers of pilgrims peak and some evenings.
- Must be willing to work in conditions of stress repeatedly and function well under pressure.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, and see up close and from afar. Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form. Tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (20 pounds).
