POSITION SUMMARY
The Controller at a Cristo Rey school plays a critical role in managing the school’s financial operations and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. The position supports the mission of Cristo Rey schools by overseeing financial planning, reporting, and control processes to maintain the school’s fiscal health and contribute to its mission of providing a faith-based, college preparatory education to underserved students.
This position manages the accounting and finance functions for the school; monitors expenditures and prepares monthly financial statements and analytical reports for the school’s board and leadership team; communicates financial information to the CFOO and President; provides technical training and assistance to professional personnel assigned to Cristo Rey’s accounting functions.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management:
Manage the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial and accounting data.
Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Prepares the annual budget with CFOO and department heads and monitors actual versus budget throughout the fiscal year.
Provides monthly financials to the CFOO for review before final monthly close.
Oversees and maintains records for all investment accounts in coordination with the CFOO. Requests funding and loans as needed.
Oversees the operations of the Accounting Department, which include accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll.
Responsible for the recording and reporting of all revenue streams including donations, tuition, corporate partner payments, investment income and in-kind contributions.
Prepares cash flow reports that show YTD Sources and Uses of Cash, along with a forecast for the remaining portion of the fiscal year (as well as subsequent years as needed).
Provides financial analysis, with emphasis on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
Audit and Compliance:
Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
Manage the annual audit process, including coordinating with external auditors and providing necessary documentation.
Oversees the production of periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations, including tax filings.
Files quarterly and annual reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Maintain compliance with Cristo Rey Network and diocesan financial reporting requirements.
Operational Support:
Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and tuition collection processes.
Oversee cash management and forecasting to ensure liquidity for operational needs.
Collaborate with the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) to align billing and collections with program operations.
Strategic Financial Planning:
Provide financial analysis to support strategic decision-making by the school leadership and board of directors.
Identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
Participate in long-term financial planning to ensure the sustainability of the school’s mission.
Leadership and Collaboration:
Supervise finance and accounting staff, fostering professional growth and development and ensuring timely completion of all performance management processes.
Collaborate with the Principal, and Advancement Office on financial matters, including fundraising and donor stewardship.
Serve as a staff liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, presenting financial updates and insights.

KEY ATTRIBUTES FOR SUCCESS
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Certified Public Accountant designation preferred.
Experience: Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of accounting or financial management experience, preferably in a nonprofit or educational setting.

Technical experience/expertise: Knowledge of GAAP, non-profit financial systems, auditing, tax and legal compliance.
Work style: Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Communication: Effective communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to diverse audiences.

SALARY AND COMPENSATION
The full pay range, which encompasses all experience levels is $125,000 to $145,000. Within this range, we pay in accordance with what could be reasonably expected based on an individual’s experience level.
Full time employees are eligible for the following benefits: medical, dental, vision, and retirement. Employees’ premiums are covered for medical, dental and vision at 100% and dependents at 50% if elected. This position is eligible for enrollment in the group voluntary retirement plan – 403b.
