Position Summary:
The Director of Music Ministry oversees and coordinates the music for all liturgical celebrations, fostering the prayerful and full participation of the parish community. This individual is responsible for selecting, directing, and performing sacred music that aligns with Catholic liturgical norms and the mission of the parish.
Responsibilities:
Liturgy and Worship:
Plan and provide music for all liturgical celebrations, including weekend Masses, Holy Days, weddings, funerals, Sacramental celebrations, and special liturgies (e.g., Christmas, Easter, Advent, Lent).
Collaborate with the Pastor and liturgy committee to ensure music reflects the liturgical seasons and enhances the prayerful atmosphere.
Select appropriate hymns, Mass settings, psalms, and other musical components in alignment with Catholic teachings and traditions.
Choir and Musicians:
Recruit, train, and direct choirs, cantors, and instrumentalists.
Schedule and lead regular rehearsals for all music groups, ensuring proper preparation for liturgies.
Foster an environment of collaboration and spiritual growth within the music ministry.
Musical Performance:
Play the organ, piano, or other instruments as needed during liturgies.
Provide accompaniment for cantors, choirs, and congregational singing.
Serve as cantor or arrange for cantors when needed.
Administration:
Develop and manage the music ministry budget, including purchasing music, instruments, and resources.
Maintain parish musical instruments and music library.
Coordinate scheduling for musicians, ensuring coverage for all liturgical events.
Parish Involvement:
Support and participate in the overall mission of the parish, fostering community and encouraging active participation in worship.
Provide guidance for children's choirs, school liturgies, or youth music ministry programs.
Be available to assist with parish events, retreats, and prayer services as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Music, Sacred Music, or a related field (Master's preferred).
Proficiency in playing organ, piano, and other liturgical instruments.
Strong vocal ability and knowledge of music theory.
Familiarity with Roman Catholic liturgy, sacred music traditions, and Church documents on liturgical music.
Experience directing choirs and coordinating musicians of varying skill levels.
Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred Skills:
Ability to incorporate a variety of musical styles, including traditional hymns, chant, and contemporary Catholic music.
Experience working in a parish or liturgical setting.
Understanding of digital music tools, notation software, and live streaming technology for virtual liturgies.
Working Conditions:
Flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and Holy Days of Obligation.
Ability to lift and move musical equipment as needed.
Regular presence at staff meetings and parish events.
