The Archdiocese of Chicago, the third largest in the United States, serves more than 2.2 million Catholics in 216 parishes in Cook County and Lake county, a geographic area of 1,411 square miles. The Archdiocese, pastored by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, has more than 13,000 employees in its systems and ministries, including Catholic Charities, the region's largest nonprofit social service agency. The Archdiocese also has one of the country's largest seminaries. The Archdiocese's 150+ elementary and secondary schools comprise one of the largest U.S. private school systems. Cor Coffee is the main outreach apostolate of the St. John Paul II Newman Center that exists to awaken the desire of college students to encounter Christ and become fully alive in Him. A Cor Coffee Barista furthers this mission by making good coffee and engaging in conversation with customers.
Pillars of Barista Formation:
- Coffee
- Make drinks excellently
- Effectively trains other baristas and provides ongoing feedback as necessary
- Tastes and adjusts dials and machine as needed
- Encounter
- Strong conversation skills and engages customers while making drinks
- Sees how working as a barista is preparation for real-world life-long mission
- Proactively maintains awareness of environment for the comfort and welcome of all, especially the newest customer
- Seeks out opportunities for intentional invitations to regular customers
- Spirituality
- Connects to Newman through another avenue besides Cor (Bible study, formation, social events, etc.)
- Prays at least 20 minutes everyday
- Displays appropriate moral authority as a representative of the Catholic Church
- Understands and can cast vision for the mission of Cor to reach the unchurched
- Responsibility
- Aware of inventory and anticipates needs
- Excellent communication skills with fellow baristas, Head Baristas, and Manager
- Receives and provides feedback
- Engages in conflict management in a healthy way
Responsibilities:
- Working a minimum of 5 hours per week (*can serve more hours to practice if schedule allows)
- Attending a monthly 1.5 hour-long in-service with all Cor Coffee Baristas
- Regularly participating in Christian formation (i.e. Bible Study, discipleship, one-on-one with a Newman
Staff Member, etc.)
- Reading and responding to weekly GroupMe messages
- Displaying commitment to excellence and professionalism
- Following all pillars to the best of one’s abilities
Requirements:
- Must be a currently enrolled college student (undergraduate or graduate)
- Must be over the age of 18
- Must be responsible and punctual
- Must be diligent and willing to complete tasks thoroughly and completely
- Must have a form of faith formation such as attending a Bible study, discipleship, or spiritual direction
