The Office of Communications exists to preach the Gospel with the heart of Jesus, through the voice and spirit of the bishop, in order to inform, inspire, evangelize, and celebrate the people of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux across all media platforms with a consistent voice and brand that encourages growth in discipleship. The Director of Communications exists to facilitate the external perception of the diocese and the bishop, leads all diocesan communication campaigns, and provides consultation to diocesan offices for the purpose of communicating the Gospel and the needs of our people. The Director leads a team in implementing a communication strategy for platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Website, Flocknote, the Bayou Catholic, and all communication materials produced at a diocesan level. The Director has final approval on all communications campaigns in collaboration with the Director of Admin & CFO, the Bishop, and Executive Leadership.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

- Works collaboratively to identify, develop, and implement effective internal and external communications strategies toward accomplishing diocesan goals and objectives.
- Advises and supports the Bishop, administrative team, diocesan offices and ministries in all matters of strategic communications and media relations.
- Directs the media activities of the Office of Communications (print, video, social media, public relations, etc.)
- Serves as the liaison between the diocese and the news media and supervises the production and distribution of news releases, arrangement for media interviews and conferences, and responds to media requests for information
- At the direction of the Bishop, Vicars General and COO, serves as the spokesperson (when needed) in issues of urgency, sensitivity.
- Manages Communications Office Staff to effectively coordinate workflow and administrative activities.
- Develops strategy and manages content for effective communication to all designated constituencies.
- Consults with diocesan offices, parishes, and schools in discerning and managing needed communication projects and manages all project intake requests.
- Develops and manages production calendar for communications projects as reviewed and approved by admin via regular communication meetings.
- Develops and manage policies and procedures for all media and communication strategy.
- Engages ongoing research of best practices and evaluating fruitfulness for all communication trends.
THIS POSITION SUPERVISES:
Graphic Designer, Senior Digital Media Producer, and Writer and Content Developer, contracted positions, and any other members of the Communications team.
QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM THE JOB SUCCESSFULLY:
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in the area of communications, public relations, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
- 5-10 years of communication related experience preferred
- Experience in communicating on behalf of the Catholic Church preferred
Other Requirements:
- Must be able to successfully pass Safe Environment training
- Must be able to communicate clearly to all by phone, verbally, and in written form
- Must possess extensive computer skills including, but not limited to, MS Office, Adobe, web-based applications, social media outlets.
- Must have skills in email and website platforms.
- Must have a very good working knowledge of social media platforms including: Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
- Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand motions.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
- Must be able to work in an office setting with and without interruptions.
- Must have knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church and its teachings and practicing Catholic in line with the teachings of the Church.
- Must be able to collaborate with a team.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive situations and documents/ records.
- Must be able to travel in one’s vehicle within the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux.
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday; 8:30AM to 4:30PM with one hour for lunch
