The Duke Catholic Center is a spiritual home where Duke University students encounter the transformative love of the Heart of Christ-in the Gospel, in the Sacraments, and in community with one another-so that students become formed as Christian leaders and apostles.
The Director of Music Ministry (DMM) is a full-time employee of the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh and reports to the Director of the Duke Catholic Center (DCC). The DMM collaborates with other staff members to lead students into a deeper experience and love of Christ especially through Music Ministry. The DMM should deeply appreciate the Church's liturgical and musical tradition to contribute effectively to the communal prayer life of the DCC.
The Duke Catholic Center celebrates liturgies in Duke Chapel, Memorial Chapel, and Goodson Chapel at Duke Divinity School. The DMM has access to the worldclass organs and pianos of these sacred spaces to lead our liturgical music program.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Plan and coordinate a comprehensive liturgical music program serving the Duke Catholic Center, including instrumental music, choral music, and congregational song.
• Work in consultation with Director to develop vision and goals for Music Ministry
• Foster an appreciation for the musical tradition of the Catholic Church
• Provide liturgical formation, music education, and practical preparation for all participants in the Music Ministry
• Provide individual voice instruction to cantors and solo vocalists
• Encourage and recruit students to offer their musical talents both individually and in ensembles
• Lead and direct student musicians, vocalists, and congregational music
• Organize and support students in planning and leading music for Retreats and weekly Holy Hours.
• Supervise Music Ministry work-study student(s)
• Supervise Music Ministry Student Director(s) in planning social events for Music Ministry students
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Duke Catholic Center
MUSIC PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION
• Direct entire Music Ministry
o Providing music for 2 Sunday Masses; 3 weekday Masses; Weekly Holy Hour; Occasional retreats
o Arranging music for multiple string and wind instruments
• Coordinate Music Ministry schedules of music groups and individuals with the DCC and Duke Chapel
o Sunday Mass ensembles consist of choir, cantor, string and wind orchestral instruments, organ and/or piano
o Weekly Holy Hour ensemble consists of vocalists, guitar, violin, flute, piano, etc.
• Recruit, schedule, direct, and rehearse all music ministers
• Plan all music to be used for liturgies
• Oversee preparation and printing of Sunday Mass worship aid: compose, edit, prepare, and print
• Guide students in planning music to be used for Weekly Holy Hour
• Oversee preparation of Holy Hour digital worship aid: compose, edit, prepare
• Oversee preparation of all choir and musician digital packets
• Continue developing personal and professional skills by taking courses and/or non-degree workshops or conferences related to campus ministry, pastoral liturgy, or music ministry.
ADMINISTRATION:
• Participate in DCC Staff Meetings and regular meetings with DCC Director
• Work with the Business Manager on budget preparation and resource allocation as related to Music Ministry
• Manage Music Ministry budget as approved and submit required reports, estimates, and requests according to relevant DCC policies and deadlines
• Select and purchase all needed music, equipment, and supplies according to budget
• Supervise the use and maintenance of music, equipment, and supplies, including digital music library, set of iPads, numerous musical instruments and upkeep of the music rehearsal room
• Maintain professional relationships with Duke Chapel Music Director, Duke Chapel Organist, Duke Chapel Organ Scholar, Duke Curator of Organs and Harpsichords, Duke Chapel VRAs
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Catholic Church
• Bachelor of Music degree required; master's degree in music, sacred music, liturgy, or related field preferred.
• Proficiency in piano and organ playing
• Proficiency in reading music
• Proficiency using relevant computer programs and iPads
• Demonstrated competency directing volunteer choirs and instrumentalists
• Minimum 2 years of related work experience in music ministry and/or campus ministry
• Available to work Sunday through Thursday: late nights on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. (Friday and Saturday off)
• Positive attitude, relationship-building skills, high level of self-motivation, strong work ethic.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Catholic teaching with particular emphasis in areas of liturgy and sacred music
• Knowledge of a variety of liturgical music styles and ability to teach these styles
• Strong leadership and organization skills
• Possess effective interpersonal communication skills especially in relating to and engaging young adults
• Employment is contingent upon the applicant passing criminal background and reference checks
• Completion of diocese-sponsored Safe Environment Training within 60 days of hire.
