Job Summary: Under direct supervision of a registered nurse, performs the duties of a primary or secondary surgical technologist in surgical procedures.
Minimum Education: Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program accredited by Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP) or by the State.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Certified through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). CPR certification.
Work Experience: 0-2 years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Basic knowledge of aseptic technique. Ability to prepare and maintain a sterile field. Basic knowledge of surgical instrumentation.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Creates and maintains sterile field, anticipates and provides instrumentation and supplies necessary to perform surgery. Facilitates patient flow through case turnover. Performs environmental activities to maintain asepsis of operating room. Anticipates needs in instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies according to technique procedure, and special requirements. Maintains correct sponge, needle, and instrument count with registered nurse and reports discrepancies as policy requires. Performs high level disinfection. Develops and demonstrates competency in specialty team cases and can serve as a preceptor. Demonstrates competencies in multiple specialties. Makes changes in surgeon's preference cards per surgeon requests to keep them current.
Decision Making: Independent judgment in planning sequence of operations and making minor decisions in complex technical or professional field.
Working Relationships: Works directly with patients and/or customers. Works with internal/external customers. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff. Works frequently with individuals at director level or above.
Special Job Dimensions: Responds to and must take emergency call, if applicable.
