Position Description
The Liturgical Musician will work closely with the priest at St. Gabriel parish and enhance the worship of the community. This person will be responsible for playing the organ and singing at Mass, selecting music for all liturgies, and overseeing the training and coordination of any additional musicians and vocalists. This position will be paid per service.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Travel to the St. Gabriel Dundee and Ida, MI locations
- Active member of the Roman Catholic Church.
- Formal musical training or training in liturgical music is preferred.
- Competency with the organ, and the ability to sing if no cantor is available.
- Familiarity with the Church’s teaching on music in the liturgy, especially as described in the documents Sacrosanctum Concilium (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) ch. 6, Musicam Sacram (Instruction on Sacred Music), Tra le sollecitudini (Pope Pius X’s Motu Proprio on Sacred Music), and Sing to the Lord (2007 USCCB Document on Music in Divine Worship), or an openness to become familiar with the Church’s musical tradition.
Work Schedule
- To lead the liturgical music weekly at the 11:00 AM Sunday Mass in Dundee, MI; and to lead the liturgical music every other week at the 6:00 PM Saturday Mass and 8:30 AM Sunday Mass in Ida, MI.
- When requested, if available, can accompany funeral and wedding Masses.
