SUMMARY: Researches and writes features and news in the editorial processes of The Catholic Sun and any and all of its related print (incl. Solis Magazine), online, social media, direct mail and audio/video components.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following; other duties may be assigned:
- Implement The Catholic Sun’s mission to inform, educate, and evangelize, and maintain a high standard of journalistic excellence across all platforms.
- Support all efforts to further the mission of the Diocese of Syracuse, its parishes, organizations, schools and offices.
- Develop, research and write – or as assigned — editorial content for bi-weekly print issues, all other print products (magazine, diocesan directory, etc.), thecatholicsun.com and all other platforms including but not limited to social media, podcasts and new initiatives.
- Attend and contribute to weekly planning/progress/update meetings (to commence January 8, 2024). Maintain high levels of personal communication with all Sun staff members.
- Contribute a minimum of two byline articles per bi-weekly Sun edition; other publication and platform stories as assigned. Follow prescribed formats for submissions.
- Share in rotation with editor and staff writer(s) for coverage of evening and weekend assignments as needed.
- Work collaboratively with communications team members for cross promotion of team efforts to further diocesan initiatives.
- Other responsibilities as assigned, keeping pace with ever evolving media needs.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field and a minimum of two years of experience in print media as a writer. Commensurate experience considered. Experience or demonstrated efforts to acquire skills in social media and new media platforms and products in timely fashion. High level knowledge of the Catholic Church, its mission, and practices.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Excellent writing, organizational and communications skills. Familiarity with or ability to learn Microsoft Word. Ability to take basic photos to accompany articles assigned. Knowledge of Adobe Suite, especially InDesign software, and WordPress content management system is a plus. Must have an excellent knowledge of journalism, grammar, communication skills and general news operation. Professional presence and the ability to build strong relationships with various individuals and constituencies. Excellent time & project management skills with adherence to production deadlines. Able to work independently in offsite assignments. Maintain good relationships and open communications with Sun staff, pastors, parishes, schools, personnel, and diocesan groups and manage multiple relationships and priorities.
