The Director of Music for St. John the Evangelist will prepare and execute all aspects of the musical needs for the liturgical life of the parish. Ideally, the Director will have a balanced appreciation for and application of the broader musical tradition of the Catholic faith, including both ancient and contemporary styles. Above all, the Director will have a good sense of the liturgical life of the Church, understanding the ebb and flow of the seasons, feast days, and special rites. A life of prayer will be the ground and guiding force of the entire ministry.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Pastor to provide robust, beautiful, and prayerful liturgies
- Work each week to prayerfully select, prepare, and execute the music for the formal liturgical gatherings of a given week, including: Sunday Masses, Holy Days of Obligation, Weddings, and Funerals
- Opportunities to teach/work with students in St. John Catholic Academy
- Provide the music each week for the "School Mass"
- Recruit and train a competent choir for at least one Mass on the weekend
- Hire special instrumentalists for major Solemnities of Christmas & Easter
- Keep up to date with licensing requirements and copyright regulations
- Maintain working knowledge of sound system
- Other duties as assigned by the Pastor
Qualifications:
- A faithful Catholic Christian in good standing with the Church who loves its mission
- Formal training and/or degrees in music are preferred
- Experience of parish music ministry for a period of at least five (5) years is desirable
- Knowledge of the liturgical life of the Church, with a willingness to learn more
- A competent vocalist
- Keyboard skills desirable (piano/organ, etc)
- Leadership and teaching abilities
