The Department of Philosophy of Ave Maria University in Ave Maria, Florida invites applications for a full-time position in philosophy at the rank of assistant professor to begin in the Fall of 2025. Applicants who specialize in Thomistic natural philosophy, Thomistic moral philosophy, or Thomistic metaphysics and who have a broad knowledge of the history of philosophy are of particular interest. Competitive applicants will be active in research and publishing and excellent teachers (or at least show promise of being excellent teachers). Applicants should also understand the nature and purpose of a Catholic liberal arts education and be familiar with and committed to the Catholic Church’s teaching on the mission of Catholic universities as expressed in Ex corde Ecclesiae and its teaching on philosophy as expressed in Aeterni Patris and Fides et ratio. Duties include teaching three undergraduate courses per semester and the usual committee work. Ph.D. by August, 2025 is preferred but highly qualified ABD applicants will be considered. Salary will be commensurate with experience and credentials.
The application dossier should include: (1) a letter of application; (2) a CV; (3) a writing sample of no more than 25 pages; (4) a brief statement discussing the applicant’s teaching method and providing evidence of excellence in teaching (official teaching evaluations should be submitted when available); (5) a 1-2 page personal statement in which the applicant explains: (a) his/her proficiency in Thomistic philosophy; (b) how his/her work in philosophy relates to the teaching of Aeterni Patris and Fides et ratio; and (c) the contribution he/she can make to a Catholic liberal arts institution like Ave Maria University that is committed to implementing Ex corde Ecclesiae.
Applicants should arrange for three confidential letters of recommendation supporting their application.
