Job Description: Instructional Specialist
Purpose: The full-time Instructional Specialist position was created for the purpose of providing integral instructional and coaching support to teachers. The Instructional Specialist also provides intervention for struggling students needing assistance in an individual setting.
Supervisor: This position reports to the Principal
The Instructional Specialist is integral to the success of the process and implementation. This person must have demonstrated effective instructional skills for a number of years. In addition, this person must have/earn the trust of the other staff members in the building.
The following functions are critical to the success of this process and are the priorities, which guide the Instructional Specialist on a daily basis.
- Model enthusiasm, commitment and intensity for curriculum implementation.
- Visit classrooms on a daily basis to:
- Encourage and support teachers in their efforts to implement and create Academic Learning Time for every student
- Demonstrate strategies teachers can be using to improve learning.
- Observe and problem solve with teachers on how to overcome student literacy learning obstacles.
- Be “on call” to support teacher with their questions and concerns
- Organize and lead weekly staff development programs, which are needs based and focus on the accomplishment of benchmarks.
- Organize and monitor the assessment processes and data analysis used to determine student reading performance and instructional grouping.
- Assist teachers with analysis and instructional use of student formative reading data and provide student intervention when needed.
- Ensure effective communication with the other members of the Leadership Team
- Facilitate weekly grade level or team meetings focusing on the accomplishment of the benchmarks.
- Continually upgrade his/her literacy and instructional knowledge and skills.
- Facilitate the development and publication of a bi-monthly Literacy Newsletter to parents.
- Monitor student progress to ensure data is entered and current
Qualifications Profile & Education
- Certification/License in Reading Mastery
- State Certification as an Elementary Teacher
- Bachelors from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
- Masters Degree in related area preferred
Experience
- Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels a plus.
