Given their role in communicating information among all stakeholders, the Assistant Principal for Student Life must be a socially skilled individual, capable of maintaining calm and reason even in the most tense of situations. They are heavily involved in the day-to-day operations as they relate to students and faculty as a whole. The Assistant Principal for Student Life assists the Principal and Director of Curriculum and Instruction as a mentor to teachers for guidance and/or direction. In addition, they serve as a member of the schools academic administrative team, and the School Emergency Response Team (SERT)The Assistant Principal of Student Life is responsible for the oversight of the discipline process, which necessitates the development and administration of procedures related to all student responsibilities in the areas of attendance, behavior, and dress code.
In conjunction with the Office of Student Life Support Staff, the Assistant Principal for Student Life assures responsible student behavior on and off campus, through thoughtful and intentional student programming and the consistent application of school rules. The Assistant Principal for Student Life is responsible for assisting the Principal in providing school-wide leadership performing administrative and supervisory duties as assigned by the Principal and helping students achieve the fullest benefits of all programs, services, and opportunities of the school. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesTo be a leader of the school focused on the day-to-day experiences and activities of students including non-academic, co-curricular, extracurricular, and contact with parents regarding discipline.Monitors the standards of conduct for students and staff members by developing and maintaining a positive climate that encourages responsible independence.Works with the Principal in developing mission and vision-centered professional development. Supports the school and its leadership in fulfilling the school mission and attaining the vision.
Evaluates school culture and climate as well as the effectiveness of the school discipline system.Assist the Principal with ensuring the faculty are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of student support and discipline. Assists the Principal in the evaluation of faculty and staffAssists in supervising student conductAssists in the implementation, supervision, and evaluation of the total school instructional programAssists in the selection, assignment, and orientation of staffAttends administrative team meetings and other committee meetings. Works closely with Admissions to create structures and plans for student transition into high school. Student Activities and ProgramsCreate, plan, and organize student programming through the compilation and composition of the yearly school Calendar.Collaborate with other school departments for the successful execution of school-wide programming, events, and activities.
(Office of Spiritual Life, Counseling, Athletics, etc.)Oversees (in conjunction with Student Life Support Staff) all student activities including major dances, homecoming, spirit week, athletic contests (both on and off campus), etc.In conjunction with the Principal, coordinates student club/activity budgets and stipends for club/activity moderatorsShares planning, coordination, and execution duties for major school events; including, but not limited to: Lions Academy, Orientation, Assemblies, Parent Evenings, Baccalaureate, and Commencement.Participates in the supervision and safety of school events in all areaIn collaboration with the Principal, and Director of Curriculum & Instruction is responsible for the development and implementation of federal or state aid programs including but not limited to Title I, Title IIA, Title III, and Title IVStudent Life Services and DisciplineIn conjunction with Student Life Support Staff Faculty and Administration, maintains student attendance and discipline and follows through with correspondence record keeping relating to attendance and discipline; including accurate records of attendance and disciplinary actions throughout the students four yearsProactively notifies parents and Principal, in writing, of matters regarding attendance/ discipline probation, suspension, and recommendations for dismissalCoordinates with the Principal, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Student Life Support Staff about discipline issues as they ariseKeeps the Principal fully informed on student issues and all other relevant matters pertaining to school lifeCoordinates conferences with students, parents, and teachers concerning issues related to student support as well as student behaviorCounsel students when necessary, working closely with the Counseling Department.Works closely with the Student Life Support Staff for Attendance, Student Support, Intervention, and Discipline. Along with the Student Life Support Staff, assigns and monitors lockers, organizing the distribution of student devices.Implements and enforces rules and regulations regarding school policy as stated in the Student and Parent Handbooks.Communicates with teachers regarding decisions concerning students involved in disciplinary procedures.In collaboration with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Dean of Community Growth & Development, supports teachers in establishing procedures that promote good order in the classroom.Assists teachers with classroom management procedures.Directs the work of the Student Life Support Staff with the monitoring of attendance, the verification of authenticity of notes from parents of students who have been absent, and contacting parents of students who are not present.Reviews with the Principal statistics regarding lateness, absenteeism and discipline infractions on a monthly basis and conducts appropriate follow-up with parents of students who are excessive offenders.SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES: Complete supervisory rounds as assigned; Supervise student movement during classroom transitions;Monitor classrooms, hallways, and restrooms;Supervise the cafeteria during designated lunch periods; Complete afterschool duty as part of the duty rotation schedule for the Office of Student Life;Attend student activities, games, and/or events as the Administrator on Duty when assigned;KNOWLEDGE OF: Have an understanding of Catholic education and pedagogy; andKnowledge of child development, learning, and behavior Knowledge of effective assessment methods, data management, and interpretation Able to manage student behavior Creating and implementing student behavior expectations Conflict resolution strategies State policy and laws affecting the management of student behaviors Able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form Able to work collaboratively with others in the school community Skill in critical thinking and planning Skill in handling multiple tasks simultaneously Skill in job-appropriate technology Strong writing and editing skills Knowledge of the use of office equipment Proficiency in Google Apps, Microsoft Office Suite, social media platforms and online content, and student management systemABILITY TO: Build positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members Collaborate and communicate effectively with key stakeholders through a variety of methods Provide leadership of behavior management and supervision Facilitate the resolution of conflict Plan, organize, and manage time and resourcesPHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear.
