PT- Assistant Archivist
Work Location: The Archdiocese of Hartford
Hours: PT
The Assistant Archivist will work closely with the Archdiocesan Archivist to collect, prepare, administer, preserve, display, and safeguard the official and ancillary records of enduring value for the central administrative offices, parishes, and affiliate ministries of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford.
Essential Functions: · Assist with daily internal operations of the Archives and Records Center with a focus· on providing reference and research services, maintain daily operations in absenceof Archdiocesan Archivist. · Handle and follow through on requests via telephone, email, postal mail, and inperson. · Provide general reference and preform limited research using appropriateprocedures and resources · Schedule appointments and work directly with administrative personnel, clergy,parishioners, and other researchers approved to access and use the Archivescollections and Records Center holdings. · Appropriately administer official, historical, sacred, confidential/ sensitive, etc.,records and materials. · Work with paper documents, newsprint, artwork, microfilm, photographic material,are books, digital content, sacred objects, textiles, reference sources, and otheroriginal and fragile materials. · Routinely locate, pull, and re-shelve/ re-file requested materials; lift and carry boxesweighing up to 40 pounds; properly load/ unload, push, and maneuver carts carrying· Archives/ Records Center records and supplies. · Coordinate pick-up and delivery of record transfers/ deposits; process corresponding paperwork.
Administrative Responsibilities: · Maintains good working relationships and effective communications among all· Archdiocesan personnel, external vendors, researchers, and visitors· Ability to work closely with the Archdiocesan Archivist to coordinate all aspects of· departmental operations· Work well in multicultural surroundings· Maintain a consistent daily work schedule· Adhere to established policies and procedures· Maintain confidentiality· Attend all staff and committee meetings, as necessary.
Educational Requirements and Experience: · Master’s degree in library science with a concentration in Archives Management/· Administration or equivalent degree in related field, is preferred. · One to three years of experience working with archival and/or library collections.records management theory and practice; or a related field with an emphasis inmuseum studies, history, religion, or art history, is preferred. · Previous office and/or customer service-related work is desirable. · Experience working in a religious environment, is preferred. · Understanding of archival collection management database systems, is desirable.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions: · Prolonged standing, walking and/or sitting.· Daily reading from a computer screen and print material (including microfilm.) · Physical exertion to manually, move, lift, carry, and push/ pull items weighing up to· 40 pounds. · May require stooping, bending, reaching, and use of stepstools and ladders up to· four feet. · Light housekeeping duties (vacuuming, dusting, emptying dehumidifiers, trash· disposal, etc.) · May be exposed to dust, mold, and other allergens, interaction with cleaning and· preservation chemicals. · Will work in a setting which is semi-climate controlled. · Occasional work at off-site locations.
