Director of Facilities and Grounds

Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church is looking for a Director of Facilities and Grounds (DFG). This is a full-time position. The Director of Facilities and Grounds is the person who will help advance the mission of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church by keeping our facility operating at peak performance so that our pastoral staff can focus on fostering live-changing encounters with Jesus. The Director of Facilities and Grounds will oversee all aspects of maintaining our facility. This person must be exceedingly well-organized, proactive, and possess a wide range of skills related to facility and grounds maintenance. The DFG must have a passion for the mission of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church and consider their role essential to accomplishing that mission. They must have an eye for detail, a commitment to excellence, and an exceptional work ethic.
The DFG is responsible for the effective, efficient, and safe maintenance, renovation, and upkeep of parish buildings and grounds. Main duties include supervising the preventative, routine, and emergency maintenance and upkeep of the buildings and property for the Church campus. Primary systems include HVAC, plumbing, electrical, security, fire safety,
energy management, irrigation, and grounds. The DFG will supervise maintenance volunteers/employees and outside contractors. This is a working position; the DFG personally performs routine to mid-level maintenance and janitorial functions. This staff member also coordinates with the maintenance staff at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic School to ensure that the entire campus is reverenced as Holy Ground worthy of the mission and ministry of the parish.
The position reports to the Pastor and/or his delegate (The Director of Parish Operations and Stewardship) and operates with latitude for the use of independent judgment and initiative. Salary is negotiable based on experience and education, and the position is benefits eligible.
Ministerial Character
The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church which the Archbishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ's mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or laypeople). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.
Positions employed at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

The Director of Facilities and Grounds will oversee the management and operations of all the physical facilities of the Church campus. Provide oversight and responsibility for the buildings, grounds, parking lots, equipment, building systems, general security, and housekeeping, ensuring the facilities are fully operational, safe, clean and neat, and prepared for Masses and ministry activities. Oversee and perform maintenance/repairs for the Church buildings, equipment (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire/life safety, waste management) and property, or act as the Church representative with outside contractors and inspectors coming onto the property or into the buildings. The DFG is responsible for developing budgets and long-range facilities plans based on the parish's future needs;
oversees the functioning of all building systems; and monitors budgets and oversees bids and contracts.
Essential Duties
An integral part of this ministry for the Church is to support and uphold the teachings of the Catholic Church and the mission of the parish in both your professional and personal life.
Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in ongoing professional and personal faith formation.
Ensure compliance with all Archdiocese of New Orleans policies and procedures.
Collaborate with the pastor and/or Director of Parish Operations and Stewardship in developing a comprehensive plan to address the operational and maintenance needs of the parish buildings and grounds. Serve as a resource to the staff regarding building operations and maintenance.
Direct the implementation of the annual work plan regarding facility maintenance and upkeep. Supervise and/or perform required maintenance or contracts with others as appropriate. Evaluate the methods and procedures used in performing the maintenance and custodial duties and revise as necessary. Obtain bids and contracts for work, which is not done by staff; oversee fulfillment of contract terms.
Oversee grounds, landscaping, and tree maintenance with appropriate contractors; develop a comprehensive land management program.
Perform janitorial services as needed; oversee all janitorial contracts.
Assure the routine operation of all facility/plant systems and equipment. Conduct periodic equipment maintenance checks as well as checking plumbing, electrical, drainage, time and security systems. Arrange repairs as needed and/or notifies the Director of Parish Operations when systems need to be replaced.
Coordinate safety and security procedures as well as specialized needs. Develop and implement procedures to address problems that arise within the facilities, consistent with parish and Archdiocese guidelines.
Maintain adequate inventory of custodial, maintenance, and operational supplies. Purchase or rent supplies/equipment as necessary. Maintain operating manuals and serial numbers of equipment owned by the parish. Maintain and inventory parish tools and equipment. Maintain parish blueprints, maps, etc.
Coordinate the energy management program.
Prepare and submit budget for maintenance. Monitor expenses and authorize expenditures within parish guidelines.
Maintain current level of knowledge and skills required to perform the job. Attend workshops and classes. Maintain membership/affiliation with appropriate professional organizations.
Supervise maintenance and custodial personnel and volunteers in the parish. Participate in the recruitment of volunteers and trained professionals.
Assist the Pastor or his delegate in preparing information on major capital projects, including building renovation, remodeling, or improvement. If project is approved, serves as the liaison between the parish and the contractor(s) and vendors in overseeing completion of work.
Respond to facility alarms, alerts, and system failures.
Provide prompt response to requests and issues.
Coordinate annual inspection of facilities with Risk Management.
Ensure compliance with health and safety standards and industry codes.
Verify payment and invoicing match work performed and contract pricing.
Serve as primary contact for facility related emergencies, which may require evening and weekend work.
Assist with special event coordination. Ensure proper scheduling of set up and take down for meetings, special events, worship, weddings, and otherwise as directed.
Implement, monitor, and follow policies and procedures designed to improve operations, minimize operating costs, and provide efficient use of labor and materials.
Schedule and coordinate work with outside contractors, as necessary.
Develop and manage volunteer facilities team. Schedule and coordinate efforts of the team, as needed. Act as point of care for all facilities team members.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the structure and basic teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
Knowledge of the practices, methods, and equipment utilized in facility maintenance, construction, and repair activities; including skills and abilities related to plumbing, janitorial, electrical systems, painting, carpentry, construction and heating and air conditioning systems.
Knowledge of security practices and protocol related to facility management.
Knowledge of safety practices and applicable regulations.
Ability to diagnose and perform routine to mid-level repairs.
Must be computer literate; able to understand, learn, and use technology-based systems.
Ability to work from ladders, adjust to height and close quarters, withstand heat and cold, good eye-hand coordination and flexibility. Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to operate equipment, owned and rented.
On-call availability for emergencies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge of the approaches and techniques involved in budgeting, labor relations, contract management, project management, record keeping, etc.
Capable of coordinating multiple tasks and adjusting to the changing priorities, meeting deadlines, and scheduling of a growing Church community.
Demonstrate a strong work ethic and take initiative.
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, balance competing priorities and tight deadlines, work under pressure and remain flexible.
Ability to recruit and train others so the Church is fully equipped to respond to any need pertaining to grounds and facilities.
Must be able to use discretion and maintain confidentiality at all times.
Demonstrate sound judgment in decision making.
Understanding of and alignment with the core values, mission, and vision of the parish.
Must be integral and committed to living a public life that is founded in Christ likeness and above reproach.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED.
Maintenance and technician certifications are desirable.
Minimum of (2) years in facilities management or related occupation; Experience in one or more of the technical areas of HVAC, Electrical, Electronics, Plumbing, Locksmith, Security Controls, Gardening & Landscaping, Construction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the job as listed above.
Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church.
