Title: Photojounalist
Department: Office of Communications/The Georgia Bulletin
Reports To: Editor of The Georgia Bulletin
FLSA Status: Exempt
Job Summary: The full-time Photographer/ Multimedia Journalist for The Georgia Bulletin is responsible for the visual storytelling aspect of news coverage for The Georgia Bulletin newspaper as well as for the proper maintenance and management of archive photos for The Bulletin. The photojournalist is expected to travel to assignments, shoot professional photos in a journalistic editorial style, gather information, write and edit captions, participate in the selection and editing of photographs and captions as well as helping with the general editing and storytelling processes.
Videography and video production experience a plus, but not required. The photographer is responsible for taking news, sports, portrait and feature photographs for use in print, for the paper's website and for social media platforms, as well as for various archdiocesan projects. Assignments will include travel as well as evening and weekend events, in addition to coverage of breaking news stories.
Writing experience helpful; photographer is responsible for writing all photo captions and may contribute to editorial content. A good candidate will have a good working knowledge of the Catholic faith, its liturgy and familiarity with the North Georgia Catholic community. A working knowledge of the Associated Press Stylebook and Catholic News Service Stylebook is needed.
The candidate should have the ability to take photographs or shoot video in an unobtrusive manner at liturgical and religious ceremonies, have attention to detail and be proficient in Microsoft Word and the Adobe Suite including Adobe Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom and Camera Raw. The photographer maintains a well-organized archive and a public SmugMug page. Flexibility with schedule and reliable transportation is a must. A cordial attitude in representing the diocesan newspaper is required.
The photojournalist reports to the editor of The Georgia Bulletin for all editorial direction, workflow determination as well as personnel matters, i.e. salary, hours, and performance appraisals.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
• The photographer is responsible for taking news, sports, portrait and feature photographs for use in print, for the paper's website and for social media platforms, as well as for various archdiocesan projects.
• Gathers information to be used in captions. Writes and edits captions.
• Assists in overall production of the newspaper and web stories.
• Maintains and manages well-organized archive in accordance with regulations and guidance from the Office of Archives and Records.
• Maintains a third-party photo website (currently Smug Mug) to offer wider distribution of photographs and generate additional revenue.
• Generates story ideas and leads. Collaborates well with reporting team
• Assists with archdiocesan photo projects including portrait photography.
Required Education /Experience:
• Degree in journalism or related field, or proven photography experience, preferably full-time experience in print publications and online news outlets.
Required Skills/Abilities:
• Knowledge of the Catholic faith and the North Georgia Catholic community
• Excellent communications skills
• Good interpersonal, collaborative and relationship-building skills.
• Strong conceptual skills and creative problem-solving ability.
• Excellent photographic skills needed.
• Videography and video production experience a plus, but not required.
• Strong writer and communicator.
• Ability to communicate technical information through non-technical verbal and written communications.
• Ability to prioritize so that goals and deadlines are met.
• Working knowledge of The Associated Press Stylebook, Libel Manual and Catholic News Service Stylebook on Religion a plus.
• Ability to work independently and with a team
• Consistent attention to detail.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Adobe Suite, including Lightroom, Bridge, Camera Raw, InDesign, Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a preferred but not required
Work Environment:
• General office environment
• Must be able to regularly stand, sit, talk, hear, and have use of both hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard
• Must be able to sit at a computer for an extended period
• Light to moderate lifting may be necessary
• Excellent writing and verbal skills (business conversation ability with numerous phone calls, clergy, and guests)
Comments:
• The work week for this position is generally 37.5 hours on a year round basis; however the position requires a willingness and flexibility in work hours when necessary to fulfill job responsibilities. Employee is subject to Personnel Policies and procedures prescribed for all personnel.
