Position Summary
Walsh University is seeking an Analytical Chemist to assist the Director of Scientific Excellence Laboratory and other faculty and staff on an as needed project-by-project basis. Located in North Canton, Ohio, the University has provided outstanding educational opportunities to students in graduate and undergraduate programs for 61 years.
Some of the strongest programs on campus include chemistry, biology, business and health sciences like PT, OT and nursing. Walsh has substantial relationships with our regional business community and have created unique partnerships and new and innovative opportunities to serve businesses and be a local, regional, national and international resource.
In 2019, Walsh created a collaborative partnership with Shimadzu Instruments to acquire a suite of some of the most state-of-the-art analytical equipment in the market offering unique liberal arts experiences for our undergraduate students while providing a new contract research and analytical services to regional businesses and organizations. Walsh University is seeking to hire an Analytical Chemist to perform select lab activities and assist in specific projects. Activities include, but are not limited to conducting routine chemical and elemental analysis, instrument maintenance and quality control activities. The candidate will need to be a competent analytical chemist with substantial skills in the latest instrumental methods.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Understanding of analytical technology, method development, method qualification/validation, and regulatory analytical requirements.
- Conduct day to day lab operations by managing multiple analytical project related to the development, validation and/or troubleshooting of sensitive, efficient, and reliable assays for selected client projects
- Work in conjunction with the DCSEL and clients to ensure on-time delivery of results
- Maintain proper lab protocols for safety, reliability, regulatory reporting as needed and other functions as needed.
- Maintains equipment and instruments in good operating condition; recognizes any malfunctions and troubleshoots as needed.
- Conduct routine preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on instruments and equipment.
- Works collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders to communicate with the DCSEL about projects, develop strategies to adjust for complications, ensures client needs are met.
- Ensures that analytical records are properly maintained, instrument logs are current and all needed records are current and stored properly.
- Works with the chemistry faculty relative to proper disposal of chemical waste and needed glassware.
- Maintains a clean and professional lab work environment.
- Performs other tasks as requested by DCSEL relative to projects, protocols, client needs.
- Other duties as assigned or required.

Required Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities)
Must understand and support the Mission, Vision and Code of Ethical Conduct of Walsh University, as a Catholic higher education university as expressed in Ex Corde Ecclesiae, and possess the following:
Education
- PhD in analytical chemistry or related discipline
- MS in analytical chemistry or related discipline, with 2+ years relevant experience
- BS in analytical chemistry or related discipline, with 3+ years relevant experience
- Industry experience preferred, familiarity with Shimadzu analytical equipment is a plus
- Experience with EPA, OSHA and ISO 9000 or higher regulations is preferred
Work Experience
- Laboratory experience performing method development, qualification, and validation activities
- Have working knowledge of spectroscopy, ICP, HPLC, GC and MS instruments and techniques
- Experience with routine analytical instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
