The Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland was founded on April 23, 1847. Under the leadership of the Most Reverend Edward G. The Office of Catholic Education provides expertise, experience, and energy to lead and assist those who carry out the education ministries of the Diocese of Cleveland. In steadfast support of our over 40,000 students and their families, the Office works to ensure that each School can deliver strong, positive, vibrant Catholic education for continued growth in academic excellence and faith formation.
Founded in 1947 by Monsignor William Newton, Elyria Catholic High School, the only Catholic high school in Lorain County has educated three generations of families in a nurturing environment and a personalized approach to education. With an ever-increasing enrollment, currently at 480 students in grades nine through twelve, Elyria Catholic strives to advance its mission, "to empower young adults to identify and use their God-given gifts to learn, worship, and serve guided by Catholic tradition."
Elyria Catholic is a Diocesan-owned and operated high schools, which functions under a President/Principal model of school administration. The President serves as the chief operating officer, supported by the Vice President of Philanthropy Engagement, Director of Finance, Director of Marketing, Director of Buildings & Grounds, and additional staff members responsible for marketing, communications, building maintenance, and advancement. The Principal is the school's chief academic officer, supported by an Assistant Principal of student life, Assistant Principal of Academics, and other staff, including guidance, athletics, and all faculty.
Major Responsibilities:
- Establish and maintain rapport with students.
- Work in collaboration with classroom teachers, related academics, intervention specialists, behavior specialists, specialized supports, administration, and other student attendants to meet student’s needs.
- Maintain the dignity, privacy, and confidentiality of all students with disabilities, families, and school personnel.
- Report suspected child abuse, suicidal ideation, and dangerous behaviors as required by law, policies, and school procedures.
- Recognize and respect role differences of teachers, paraeducators, educational aides, and other licensed professionals.
- Practice within one’s skill limits and request direction, instruction, guidance, or additional training for new or unfamiliar tasks.
- Maintain boundaries for relationships and communication with students and their families within the professional and ethical scope of responsibility.
- Reflect on one’s performance, seek guidance, and use feedback to continually improve.
- Demonstrate respect and appreciation for cultural differences in verbal and written interactions with students, families, and school personnel.
Under the direction or approval of the intervention specialists, behavior specialist and/ or educational team:
- Assist students within the general education classroom with daily schedules, learning, transitions, expected behavior, and social interactions.
- Support student’s independence, self-advocacy, positive sense of identity, self-control, and self-reliance.
- Support students in their use of self-assessment, problem-solving, and other cognitive strategies.
- Track and record student progress on approved academic and/or behavior interventions.
- Apply specified reinforcement throughout the day or as needed.
- Assist in structured group activities within general education, small group, and related academics utilizing the leader-prompter model and reinforcement.
- Follow and implement written instructional plans, seeking clarification and training as needed.
- Identify, assess, troubleshoot, and communicate relevant information about academic/behavioral reinforcements and/or environmental considerations.
- Support students by modeling and facilitating the use of conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving.
- Support the implementation of executive functioning, social-emotional and behavioral interventions.
- Create materials that may enhance or aid the student learning.
- Perform other related duties that may be assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, student development, counseling, or relative program.
- Willingness to work with diverse students
- Successful BCI and FBI background checks and VIRTUS certified or willing to be certified.
- Commitment to the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church and to best practices in Catholic education. Familiarity with the teachings, traditions, and policies, which apply to formation and development of high school-aged youth.
