The Archdiocese of Denver is a Colorado nonprofit organization that oversees the activities of the Catholic Church for the 25 counties of northern Colorado. Other ecclesiastical entities, including various charitable trusts and Colorado nonprofit corporations distinctly operated, are combined for financial reporting. As an Accounting team, we work to provide financial processing, reporting, and analytical services to our religious and lay leadership, donors, and other stakeholders.
The position will be responsible for various accounting functions from general ledger through financial statement preparation. The position has direct day-to-day responsibility for management, oversight, and support of staff accountants and routine accounting processes. The Accounting Manager will have a leadership role in instilling a culture of mission within the team. The position will also have direct responsibility for collaboration with other departments including HR/Payroll, Treasury/Finance, and Data and Payment Processing. The ideal candidate is highly detailed oriented with strong communication, problem solving, and collaboration skills.

- Essential Duties:
- Oversee and manage the month-end close activities and general accounting functions of the Archdiocese and its Ecclesiastical Entities, including:
- Review journal entries and ensure transactions are recorded, documented, reviewed, and supported in accordance with US GAAP, internal controls, and company policies.
- Review account reconciliations and analyze key accounts that require high levels of judgment or expertise.
- Provide frequent coaching and direction to staff accountants and assist in identifying solutions to discrepancies in financial records.
- Oversee and manage the quarterly and annual reporting functions of the Archdiocese and its Ecclesiastical Entities, including:
- Review consolidating accounting entries including elimination of intercompany balances/activity.
- Provide variance analysis on elements of the financial statements.
- Ensure completeness of records by assessing accounting treatment for nonroutine transactions and accruals required.
- Respond to financial inquiries by gathering, analyzing, summarizing, and interpreting data.
- Assist with the preparation, review, and analysis of financial statements and accompanying footnotes to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Support external audits, including preparation and review of audit requests
- Develop a high performing team contributing to the culture and mission of the Church.
- Act as a trusted leader and mentor to team members, building trust and sharing knowledge and expertise to increase overall performance and engagement.
- Inspire team members to recognize they are on mission for the Church and that their roles are of great importance to achieving that mission through a focus on collaboration, development, and life in the sacraments.
- Administer and maintain current financial reporting systems. Assist the Director of Accounting in any upgrade or
- Collaborate with HR to analyze payroll records and reports, and help ensure compliance with governmental requirements especially related to payroll, accounts payable, and taxation.
- Assist the Director of Accounting in the preparation and administration of annual budgets.
- Maintain strong knowledge of the entity operations and programs.
- Research technical accounting issues, unusual transactions, and new accounting standard implementation for compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP).
- Leverage IT tools to introduce efficiencies and enhance accounting operations.
- Serve as a resource for the institution and co-workers by providing effective communication, direction, and resources as appropriate on issues of accounting, taxation, internal control and financial reporting.
- Collaborate and serve as business partner with other departments on accounting related projects.
- Perform other duties or assist on special projects as required by the Director of Accounting.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience:
- Bachelor of Accounting degree required
- Demonstrated technical ability in Accounting with 5+ years of related experience and a portion of it being in a supervisory role
- CPA strongly preferred
- Knowledgeable in not-for-profit accounting
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, advanced Excel skills strongly preferred

- Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, an Accounting Manager is frequently required to communicate via talking, hearing and reading; to use hands and fingers to operate a computer and handle office equipment.
