The Office of Catholic Education provides expertise, experience, and energy to lead and assist those who carry out the education ministries of the Diocese of Cleveland. In steadfast support of our over 36,000 students and their families, the Office works to ensure that each School can deliver strong, positive, vibrant Catholic education for continued growth in academic excellence and faith formation.
The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland and Villa Angela – St. Joseph High School (VASJ) are pleased to accept applications for the position of Dean of Students. Founded in 1990 when Villa Angela Academy merged with St. Joseph High School, Villa Angela– St. Joseph High School is a diocesan-sponsored, co-educational, comprehensive, college preparatory high school
rooted in the Ursuline and Marianist traditions. VASJ is committed to the spiritual, academic, and personal growth of each student. With a population of about 500 students in grades nine through twelve, Villa Angela – St. Joseph High School provides young men and women with a nurturing and supportive educational environment in which to grow academically, spiritually, socially, and morally.
The President serves as the chief operating officer of the school, supported by the Director of Advancement, Director of Finance, Director of Marketing, Director of Buildings & Grounds, and additional staff members responsible for marketing, communications, building maintenance, and advancement. The Principal is the school's chief academic officer, supported by a Dean of Academics, this Dean of Students position, and other staff, including guidance, athletics, and all faculty.
Primary Function:
The Dean of Students is an advocate for a Christ-centered, collaborative school climate. The Dean of Students promotes the safety and welfare of each student and facilitates a productive and orderly environment. The Dean of Students is a role model for and an advisor to each member of the student body, and supports administration and faculty in formation, academic achievement, and formation of each student.
Major Responsibilities:
➢ Assist the Principal with school efforts to create positive and productive student behavior.
➢ Assess, develop, and implement student development experiences and programs that focus on fostering leadership skills.
➢ Collaborate with student organizations and clubs to support their efforts in developing leadership skills.
➢ Mentor and provide guidance to students who are interested in taking on leadership roles within the school community.
➢ Supervise support staff in tracking student attendance records.
➢ Coordinate meetings with students and parents regarding excessive absences and tardies.
➢ Communicate with parents in matters of student discipline.
➢ Collaborate with school counseling staff to support students facing personal and academic challenges.
➢ Assist the Principal in ensuring the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the building.
➢ Assist the Principal in overseeing student clubs and organizations.
➢ Assist the Principal in supervision of extracurricular activities.
➢ Attend school functions as determined by the Principal and President.
➢ Perform all other duties or tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
➢ Commitment to the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church and to best practices in Catholic education. Familiarity with the teachings, traditions, and policies, which apply to formation and development of high school-aged youth.
➢ Bachelor’s degree in education, student development, counseling, campus ministry, or relative program. Master’s degree preferred.
➢ Minimum of three years of experience in student development, student success, or relevant high school administration or teaching role.
➢ Demonstrated professionalism, leadership skills, knowledge, and behaviors to model behavior and implement strategies for high quality formation and development of students.
➢ Excellent communicator, both in written communications and in speech, with experience in post-secondary populations serving students, families of students, faculty, and administration.
➢ Energy and enthusiasm for working with and developing students for success in high school and beyond.
➢ Familiarity and ability with Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite software for use in communications and records retention.
➢ Successful BCI and FBI background checks and VIRTUS certified or willing to be certified.
