Director Clinical Pastoral Education oversees the strategic planning and administration of the Spiritual Care function across the CHS System and the Diocese of Rockville Centre. The Director provides leadership and education that shapes and supports Catholic Health Services of Long Island manifest Christ’s healing mission and aligns spiritual care goals with organizational goals. The Director, clinical Pastoral Education is accountable for the comprehensive approach to care that respects the dignity of each person, is suitable for clinical interface and produces tangible outcomes.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees strategic planning and administration of the Spiritual Care function across the CHS System and the Diocese of Rockville Centre, to ensure most effective utilization of all available resources for spiritual care.
- Formulates system-wide pastoral care policies and procedures, works with Diocese to develop diocesan policies and procedures that effect operations at CHSLI and effectively communicates these to all relevant entities.
- Adapts and implements National Association of Catholic Chaplains excellence in care standards of spiritual care delivery at all CHSLI facilities.
- Ensures that the CPE Program at CHSLI and its satellite sites follow the Standards and Procedures of the two accrediting agencies: the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Commission on Certification and Accreditation, and the certifying agency: the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.
- Administers the contracting with satellite CPE sites.
- Oversees and supports the work of the CPE supervisor.
- Evaluates the impact of the CPE students’ ministry on the CHSLI entities annually and assesses CPE program benefit to students.
- Publicize the CHS program for pastoral education, conducts initial evaluation of applications.
- Oversee the re-structuring of pastoral care departments that includes the development and management of roles and expectations for all levels of pastoral care.
- Support the development of the local budgets for the Chaplains and Pastoral Care, and for the Clinical Pastoral Education Program to ensure good stewardship of resources.
- Supports CAOs in monitoring effective spiritual care delivery at all CHSLI entities.
- Works with medical staff leadership to support appropriate integration of medical and spiritual care in acute and ambulatory care settings.
- Oversees priest chaplain personnel in collaboration with Priest Personnel Department of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
- Supports the mission, values, goals and objectives of CHSLI and the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
- Participates with other CHS senior leadership in the design of organizational structure and the development of short and long-term strategic goals.
- Serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team for the system.
- Prepare, monitor and oversee the financial budget for the CHSLI Spiritual Care and Pastoral Education department.
- Responsible for preserving personal professional qualifications and pursuing continuous professional development.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least five years of experience in Pastoral Care Administration.
- Comprehensive understanding of spirituality in the health care setting, experience in navigating ethical issues in the medical environment.
- A well formed understanding of Catholic Theology and Church history.
- Active and certified member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) and/or equivalent.
- A comprehensive knowledge base of pastoral care theory and practice.
- Endorsement from the Diocesan Bishop.

Masters Degree in Theology
Bachelor Degree
Four Units of CPE, with certification by NACC and/or ACPE

Experience:
The System Director for Spiritual Care and Pastoral Education must have at least 5 years of successful leadership experience managing spiritual care delivery in a multi site health care delivery organization. Must demonstrate effective change management capabilities. Must be a skilled communicator with the ability to converse with a broad range of professional and social cultures. Must have ability to manage conflict and competing interests.
