Job Title: Facility Custodian/Maintenance Worker
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Job Status: Full Time
Reporting Functions: Reports to pastor, principal and/or pastors designee
Job Function: Responsible for performing custodial duties, minor maintenance, and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that all parish properties, school buildings, and facilities have a pleasant and presentable appearance and are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner for students, staff and the public. Duties include, but are not limited to: trash removal, mopping, lawn maintenance and weeding, snow and ice removal, various repairs, security vigilance, and setting up for parish and school events.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Prepares school facilities for daily operations (e.g., opening building and access doors, checking perimeter of the building, performing minor repairs, etc.) to ensure school facilities are operational and safe. Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

Secures school facilities and grounds for the purpose of the safety and well-being of occupants, minimizing property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability to the school before and after school hours. Check all entrances/exits throughout the day to maintain security.

Cleans school facilities (e.g., classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, entrance, ledges/baseboards, multipurpose rooms, grounds, etc.) and parish offices in order to maintain a sanitary, safe, attractive environment by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, dusting, polishing, washing glass/mirrors, replenishing paper products and soap, mowing, weeding, raking and trimming on an ongoing basis.

Ensure safety and functionality of the cafeteria prior to use by setting up tables, chairs and trash receptacles. Clean the cafeteria following lunch by removing trash; wipe down and clean tables and chairs; break down tables and chairs as necessary; sweeping and scrubbing floors; cleaning counters, sinks, walls and windows within the cafeteria as needed.

Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparation for meetings, classroom activities, plays, concerts and events etc. Assist with special events including maintaining trash, and installing or assisting with special equipment needed. Clean grounds and buildings after special events.

Respond to emergency situations requiring immediate attention and proceed appropriately (i.e. overflowing toilet, cleaning up after an ill student, sudden structural hazard, etc.) to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning physical and educational environment using proper protective procedures.

Perform ice and snow removal on walkways and steps leading to the church, school, and parish office/rectory when necessary; ensure the safety of parishioners, students, and employees during winter months by constant removal of snow and salting. This may require coming in earlier than the scheduled start time.

Keep current on issues pertaining to health, safety, and sanitization (e.g., instruction on proper handling of hazardous chemicals, blood-borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, etc.) and learn information on new, improved, and proper procedures.

Empties trash and garbage containers in parish, parish office, and school, and dispose of trash appropriately as frequently as needed. Assures compliance with local laws and procedures regarding the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.

Maintains buildings, occasionally performing minor and routine painting, plumbing, electrical wiring, and other related maintenance activities. Changes light bulbs and replaces air conditioner filters. Notifies Pastor and Principal concerning major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.

Inspects school facilities for the purpose of ensuring site is suitable for safe operations and maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and identifying any repairs that may be necessary due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.

Annual cleaning is discussed with the Principal and then performed throughout the year during summer and school breaks which may include but not be limited to Presidents Day, Easter break, Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, etc. This cleaning includes but is not limited to; thorough cleaning of chalkboards and trays, desks and chairs, cleaning walls, painting throughout the building, stripping and waxing floors, furniture placement, and setting up classrooms, etc.

Keeps custodial closets clean and orderly. Services job-related machinery/equipment (e.g., adjusting, cleaning, and oiling vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, buffers, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining equipment in good working condition. Also changes brushes, pads, rollers, etc. on equipment. All necessary cleaning supplies needed should be submitted to the Finance Office and will be ordered through the Finance Office.

Must demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills to be able to interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people (administration, faculty, staff, students, parents, etc.).

Must be self-motivated and prompt in performing tasks and have the ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative to act without being asked. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities with frequent interruptions utilizing time management, organizational, and prioritization skills and perform duties and tasks at expected levels of professionalism.

Thorough understanding of custodial methods, processes, procedures, and use of chemicals and equipment. Knowledge of grounds and building tools, and equipment operations and possess the ability to properly care for and perform minor repairs to equipment.

Ability to read and understand documents such as labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals and use as directed.

Basic understanding of electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems, carpentry, or cabinetry skills. Possess the ability to perform minor repairs. Ability to understand floor plans and building systems.

Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the Principal.
Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability appropriate for necessary mobility to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; repetitive movements such as stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing (ladders, etc.), reaching and twisting; frequent use of tools; will regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderately heavy objects and occasionally objects over 50 pounds; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers; ability to operate equipment.
Working Conditions: Indoor and outdoor, at times required to work under inclement weather conditions; (8 hours/day on school days) Hours 6:50 AM -3:50 PM which includes one-hour lunch break. Non-school days schedule will be 8:00-12:00 and days will be discussed prior (20 hours per week summer schedule). Evening and weekend work may be required from time to time. On-call for emergencies. Holiday calendar for this position will be distributed prior to the next calendar year.
