Description
St. John LaLande School in Blue Springs is searching for a part time elementary school counselor to work two and a half days a week to provide individual counseling to help students cope effectively with personal, social, academic, and family concerns. The counselor would also teach one lesson a month in each K - 8th grade classroom to support teachers with the school's SEL program.
The day(s) of the week are flexible and can vary based on your schedule. The ideal candidate would be willing to work in partnership with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the social, emotional and academic needs of students.
St. John LaLande is a small school with an enrollment of around 225 students. SJL is committed to family and helping our students be the very best version of themselves.
Requirements
Elementary School Counselor Job Responsibilities:
- Advises and counsels students regarding academic, educational, and short-term social and emotional problems.
- Teaches monthly lessons in each classroom to support the school wide SEL curriculum.
- Remains accessible and makes an effort to know every student for whom they are responsible.
- Consults, facilitates, and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and pertinent agents on specific student and parent matters.
- Provides feedback and recommends appropriate action and solutions to individual student’s emotional and academic needs.
- Participates on a Student Success Team (HOPE Team) to identify students who may need targeted or intensive services, and coordinates with teachers and parents to help facilitate those outside services
- Provides brief counseling to address social and emotional concerns and appropriately refers/recommends students to behavioral health specialists in consultation with parents when needed.
- Communicates, coordinates, and collaborates with behavioral health specialists on developing and implementing student supports.
Work Hours:
- This position is part time.
- 2 1/2 days a week
- The work schedule is flexible and could be a possible job share with another school in our diocese
School Counselor Qualifications/Skills:
- Desire and ability to work with elementary students at the specified age level with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability
- Ability to organize tasks and manage time, and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree in Counseling/Guidance, Education, or Social Work
- Minimum of 1 year of school counseling or counseling experience
- Understanding and familiarity with computer applications and word processing functions
