SUMMARY
All Souls Parish is a growing community of around three thousand families who worship in English and Spanish and host the diocesan Traditional Latin Mass. We are a parish that includes a Church, a School, and a Cemetery. We are a community rich in history, dating back to our founding in 1887, making it one of the oldest in Catholic history in Central Florida.
The Director of Music and Liturgy is responsible for preparing and celebrating Catholic Liturgy, Rituals, and Music in English and Spanish. He/she serves the parish as principal musician, organist, and choir director according to the highest professional standards established by the profession. Also, he/she provides leadership in the planning, execution, and celebration of all parish liturgies and coordinates other liturgical ministries. The director also educates the parish in areas of music and liturgy according to the vision of the Second Vatican Council and assumes administrative responsibilities relevant to the position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. The omission of specific statements of the duties or functions does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Pastoral Minister as a Person of Faith.
As a pastoral minister, the director is responsible for nurturing his or her own faith in order to nurture the faith of others. The director is also responsible for ministering to parishioners volunteering as choir members or in the different liturgical ministries under his/her responsibility.
As a Music and Liturgical Minister
Under the leadership of the pastor, the responsibility of the director involves:
· Coordinates the music ministry for all parish liturgies.
· Assumes the role of leading musician (accompanist or choral director).
· Makes the creative choice of music and exercises its judicious placement for all liturgical celebrations.
· Recruits, schedules, and rehearses various music ministries (e.g., choirs, cantors, instrumentalists).
· Demonstrable experience in a large, multicultural parish setting with multiple choir offerings.
· Plans all liturgies, working with the priests and Liturgical Ministries Committee, including leading the Liturgical Ministries Committee.
· Collaborates with the parish and school team in the preparation and execution of all parish/school liturgies.
· Meets with respective people for the preparation of wedding/funeral music and liturgies.
· Provides and maintains the appropriate church environment for all the liturgical seasons according to the specifications of the Church documents.
· Oversees the provision of needed materials for worship, such as worship aids and audiovisual projections; coordinates with the AV ministry and prepares AV projections as needed.
Pastoral Musician as a Professional Person
Commitment to professional development is a mutual responsibility of the musician and the parish. In order to maintain a competent level of professionalism, the responsibility of the director includes:
· Practices to improve or maintain skills in voice, conducting, and the instruments upon which the musician is expected to perform.
· Researches, develops, and masters new music.
· Pursues educational advancement in musical skills that relate to the parish's need (e.g., organ, choral directing, vocal pedagogy).
· Keeps current with official statements and documents on music, liturgy, and developments in the pastoral field.
· Studies various liturgical and musical publications.
· Membership in professional organizations and attendance at national and area conferences and workshops.
· Periodic coursework in the field of pastoral liturgy and liturgical music.
Minister as Educator
The director is to educate the parish in areas of music and liturgy according to the vision of the Second Vatican Council. This responsibility includes:
· Helps the parish grow in its understanding of the role of music in the liturgy and the understanding of liturgy in the Church.
· Helps the parish learn new liturgical music at an appropriate pace.
· Serves as a resource person for the liturgical music education of the parish council, Liturgical Ministries Committee, and pastoral staff;
· Be able to demonstrate the ability to organize, motivate, and sustain volunteers in order to build a strong volunteer base for choir and liturgical ministries.
· Services as a resource person in music and liturgy for the religious education process;
· Fosters and develops the musicianship of parish music ministers and clergy.
· Coordinates workshops and concerts as needed.
· Ensures the parish worship conforms to the liturgical norms and laws of the Church.
· Educates the assembly and provides input for parish organizations in matters of liturgical understanding, sensitivity, and planning.
· Coordinates and supervises the formation, training, and scheduling of all parish liturgical ministers (sacristans, altar servers, musicians, ministers of hospitality, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, Eucharistic linens helpers, altar guild, AV ministry, Art & Environment, etc.).
Minister as Administrator
The responsibility of the director as an administrator involves:
· Makes liturgical and music policies in conjunction with the Liturgical Ministries Committee and pastoral staff, taking into consideration Diocesan and national guidelines.
· Formulates an annual budget for the parish music and liturgical program in consultation with the parish finance manager.
· Develops and maintains a liturgical music library of various styles and genres for assembly, choir, cantor and instrumentalists.
· Maintains the parish's musical instruments.
· Makes recommendations for the purchase of new instruments, sound equipment, hymnals and music supplies.
· Secures other musicians as needed for special celebrations, such as Christmas, Easter, Confirmation, etc.
· Secures proper copyrights for all worship participation aids.
· Maintains current records on all liturgical ministers.
· Maintains library of current liturgical resources.
· Maintains inventory and orders the supplies needed for the liturgies and sacramental celebrations.
· Oversees the handling and use of vestments, vessels, linens, etc.; maintains order in all liturgical ministers’ areas (sacristy, choir area, etc.).
· Facilitates the tasks associated with money collection at each celebration (laying out the correct collection bags for assigned ushers, securing collection/candle money deposits in the safe). The specifics of this process need to be clarified and worked out with the Pastor and Director of Operations.
· Oversees the opening/closing of the church facilities after celebrations.
· He/She maintains strict confidentiality in all parish and diocesan matters of concern.
Latin Mass considerations as Music and Liturgy:
The responsibility of the director in regards to the Latin Mass involves:
· Maintain and develop the Schola Cantorum
· Be competent in, or identify someone who is, the Gregorian Chant required for the Missa Cantata
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS

CATHOLIC FAITH
Practice of the Catholic faith is required. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the Church's mission and purpose. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals, or laws of the Church or the policies of the diocese.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
· Bachelor's or Master's degree in music or its equivalent such as certificates in the American Guild of Organists.
· Musical leadership requires skills in the following areas: keyboard, voice and conducting.
· Skills and experience may be required in other areas such as contemporary instrumental ensembles, orchestration, hand bells, children's choirs, composition and familiarity with musical styles of various cultures within the community.
· Demonstrate proficiency in the use of an organ/piano as well as in reading music and have 3 to 5 years’ experience in successful parish music and liturgy.
· A knowledge of the history and repertoire of sacred music.
· Working knowledge of a music composition program (Finale, Dorico, Sibelius, etc.)
· A thorough understanding of Roman Catholic liturgical Theology and praxis.
· Working knowledge of the principles and practices of Catholic-ecclesial life and structure, along with knowledge of church organization and operational procedures.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
· A high level of organizational and interpersonal skill is required. Attention to detail and working well with others is also required.
· Ability to read and analyze routine correspondence and compose appropriate responses. Ability to respond effectively to common inquiries from internal and external sources. Ability to effectively present reports and information to constituents.
· Ability to apply appropriate mathematical concepts and operations in establishing and maintaining budgets.
· Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The working hours of this position are not limited to an 8-hour day. This person will need to be available in the evening and weekends, as needed. Performs extensive computer work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, and see up close and from afar. Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (15 pounds).
