Brief Job Description: Canisius University is seeking an Assistant Director of Campus Ministry to promote the University’s Jesuit, Catholic mission by offering to the student community opportunities for faith and justice programming, retreats, service-immersions, community engagement, and pastoral care.
The Assistant Director of Campus Ministry reports to the Assistant Vice President for Mission Integration. This position involves close collaboration with other student affairs professionals and the university chaplain, as well as other university and community partners. This is a student facing role that will focus on the intersections of faith and justice creating opportunities for students to encounter God and our human community through programing aligned with Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus including but not limited to the Spiritual Exercises, anti-racism initiatives, solidarity with those on the margins, and environmental stewardship.
It is essential for the Assistant Director to be able to lead programming, collaborate with both students and community partners, and appreciate the diversity of both the Catholic tradition as well as the various spiritual backgrounds of our campus community.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Develop creative and innovative programs for the Office of Campus Ministry to meet the rapidly evolving context of the religious and spiritual life at Canisius University as Jesuit, Catholic university with a multi-faith and multicultural student body.
• Coordinate, attend, and lead student retreats including Kairos and Always Our Children, as well as develop student leader formation programs for student leaders to assist with leading these retreat experiences.
• Form local community partnerships and assist with planning and coordinating community-based learning and engagement efforts including local Buffalo service and immersion experience that align with our Jesuit values of solidarity, kinship, and being people for and with others.
• Assist with first year engagement efforts and strategize how to enhance community building and belonging for resident, commuter, and non-traditional students.
• Support special campus wide masses such as Mass of the Holy Spirit and Baccalaureate Mass.
• Recruit students to participate in campus ministry programming and manage social media and marketing of campus ministry activities.
• Provide pastoral care for students that supports their spiritual formation.
Qualifications: Required Education/Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in related field preferred.
• Experience planning, facilitating, and participating in student programing at university level.
• Familiarity with the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and Universal Apostolic Preferences.
• Affinity for and understanding of Ignatian spirituality and Catholic Social Teaching.
• Ability to articulate the connection between faith and justice as well as to connect education and advocacy to service and community engagement.
• Knowledge of student development theory and pastoral care practices.
