Position Overview:
The Director of Music and Liturgical Ministries for St. John the Evangelist will provide leadership in the planning, execution and celebration of all parish liturgical celebrations with responsibility for both sacred music and all liturgical ministry teams. The Director will also be charged with helping the Pastor form parishioners in a full, active and conscious participation in the liturgical life and riches of the Catholic Church. As a member of the Pastoral Staff, the Director is expected to take an active role in the full life of the parish. A life of prayer will be the grounding and guiding force of the entire ministry.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Sacred Music
- Collaborate with the Pastor to provide robust, beautiful, and prayerful liturgies
- Oversee and execute music for three Sunday Mass (Saturday 4:30 p.m., Sunday 8:15 and 10:45 a.m.), including organ/piano accompaniment
- Provide music for all Holy Days of Obligation, solemnities, and major feasts
- Provide music for all funeral Masses (~20/year)
- Provide music for all weddings (~10/year)
- Provide music for the weekly school Mass
- Develop and direct choir(s) serving at least one weekend liturgy
- Develop new ensembles or programs to enhance Sacred Music at Sunday Masses
- Train cantors for Sunday Masses and other liturgies
- Collaborate with our parish school to create a children's choir - providing music at one weekend Mass per month
- Potentially supervise an accompanist or choral section leaders
- Hire special instrumentalists for major Solemnities of Christmas, Easter, etc.
Liturgical Ministries
- Oversee all liturgical ministry teams, including Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, Sacristans, Altar Servers, Liturgical Decorators, as well as Funeral and Wedding Teams
- Recruit (if needed) and manage volunteer leaders with oversight of each team
- Ensure proper formation and training for team leaders and members
- Ensure organizational health of each team in their team culture and processes for communication, scheduling, and recruitment
- Prepare the texts for Sunday and special liturgies including the penitential rite and universal prayers
- Prepare worship aides as needed
- Make recommendations to the pastor regarding the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy and liturgical seasons
Other
- Seek holiness of life within the Catholic tradition as a disciple of Christ
- Be a visible presence within the parish and school community
- Provide formation for laity on the Sacred Liturgy, liturgical calendar, and Catholic musical tradition
- Provides information to Pastor and Director of Mission Operations for annual parish budget as it pertains to liturgy and music
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of all musical instruments and equipment
- Ensure the proper functioning of the all sound systems (church and parish hall) and schedule ongoing professional support for the maintenance of the systems
- Ensure compliance with licensing requirements and copyright regulations
- Other duties as assigned by the Pastor
Qualifications:
- A faithful Catholic Christian in good standing with the Church who loves its mission
- Formal training and/or degrees in music are preferred. Experience of parish music ministry for a period of at least five (5) years is desirable
- Knowledge of the liturgical life of the Church, with a willingness to learn more
- A competent vocalist
- Organ and piano skills
- Leadership and teaching abilities
- Humility
