Job Summary
The Diocese of Salina seeks an individual committed to growing in their faith and using their skills and talents to further the mission of the Church. The Diocese is known for its deep faith and commitment to service. The Chancery staff is rooted in prayer, discernment and an unyielding desire to build the kingdom.
The CFO serves as a key financial resource to the schools, parishes, Catholic Charities, the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Salina and the Chancery. The CFO ensures compliance of accounting and financial reporting.
Chief financial officer is responsible for:
1. Being a key advisor to the Bishop and advisory committees including the College of Consultors, the Finance Council, Investment Committee and several executive committees.
2. Overseeing the budget, financial priorities, cash flow, operating income, financial statement preparation, revenue and long-term planning for maximizing diocesan assets and attaining financial goals.
3. Maintain and expand the Diocesan Asset Database (oil/gas, leases, farms, estates, land management, other property) segregated by parish/diocese owned, historical value, comparative data rates by county, restrictions, and investments. Oversee all contract renewals. Visit our parish locations to understand more completely what's in the asset database. Seeks ways to monetize the physical assets.
4. Oversee the Finance staff, operational accounting functions, including payroll, and setting performance measures and priorities for the staff.
5. Expand the standard accounting system across the organization, ensuring adherence to the policies and procedures, and an audit system that illuminates gaps and opportunities to improve internal financial controls.
6. Oversee the capital projects providing guidance, forecasting ROI's, offering alternatives, and executing the approved plans for building, renovating, and any lending activity for schools, parishes and other entities within the Diocese.
7. Oversee all benefits programs including the health and retirement plans for priests and laity, evaluate plan performance and make recommendations for change and cost sharing. Negotiate better pricing or plan features that enhance recruitment efforts and employee retention.
8. Foundation: Evaluating performance, alternatives, and create recommendations to the Bishop and the Board for the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Salina, Finance Committees and executive committee. Support the CEO and maintain a collaborative relationship between Foundation and Finance Department staff.
9. Manage the information technology and maintenance department. Seek continual enhancements to cybersecurity and opportunities to utilize technology to support the Chancery staff in their duties. Manage the maintenance of the Chancery building.
10. Be a resource and support to parishes, pastors and parish staff. Provide training and guidance to parish staff on internal controls, Diocesan policies and best practices.
11. Seeks ways to organize and utilize the financial assets to better help the church fulfill its mission.
Education/Experience/Interpersonal Skills
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance required; MS degree preferred/CPA preferred.
• 5-10 years of progressive financial leadership experience required.
• Desire work history related to working with consultative bodies, investing, financial reporting, insurance, and property management. Requires ability to manage through several high priorities at one time.
• Prefer knowledge of Catholic organizations, non-profits, working with clergy/parishes, and Canon law related to temporal goods. The organization spans 31 counties in Kansas.
• Position requires track record of integrity, positive comm. skills, and moral/ethical decision making.
