Position Description
The St. Martin de Porres Senior Center (SMdP) provides support and resources to people of all faiths and nationalities aged 60 and older. This role will provide support to promote the safe day-to-day operation of the center ensuring the well-being of all participants, maintaining accurate records and reports in conjunction with the center’s program director. SMdP provides meals, fellowship, and a broad range of activities to seniors in the City of Alexandria. Programs are designed to provide seniors with the tools they need to maintain their independence for as long as possible, to help seniors age with dignity, and to enable them to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. This role ensures every interaction is warm, professional and customer-focused.
Position Responsibilities
- Responsible for coordinating coverage of the front desk duties and overseeing its operations.
- Build positive relationships with participants by engaging in conversations and understanding their needs and preferences.
- Deliver excellent customer service to participants, their families and external callers by addressing inquiries, facilitating participation in programs and maintaining a welcoming and supportive environment.
- Assist the kitchen workers with lunch service.
- Maintain accurate records, reports and statistics related to the day-to-day operations of the senior center.
- Assist the Program Director in complying with the Virginia Department on Aging service standards and the City of Alexandria accreditation standards.
- In collaboration with the Activities Coordinator, provide hands on assistance ensuring participants feel included and supported.
- Assist with completing Critical Incident Reports (CIR).
- Willingness to learn about Food Safety Standards.
- Provide backup support as needed.
Qualifications & Skills
- Effective communication skills: verbal and written. Ability to make announcements to a group of participants.
- Strong computer, data entry and clerical skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (including Excel) and the internet.
- Well organized: ability to multitask, pay attention to details and meet deadlines.
- Bilingual English and another language preferred.
- Demonstrate compassion and sensitivity to senior citizens of multi-cultural backgrounds; emphasis on working with low-income, frail or otherwise vulnerable populations.
- Ability to be to be trained in Food Safety.
- Willing to uphold Catholic moral and social justice teachings in the workplace.
Education And Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in a related field. Associate degree preferred.
- 1-year experience as an administrative assistant or operations assistant, or similar role. Current certification in CPR, First Aid and AED or willingness to acquire in the first 90 days.
Physical Demands
Ability to move around the center, including walking, standing and sitting. Ability to lift and carry up to 15 pounds. Use of hands and fingers to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls including office equipment. Ability to hear. Specific vision ability required including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
